Full Watch Along Reaction to Dragon Ball Super Episode 17

I’ll be able to watch this after work tonight.

Something a bit more prevalent in OG Dragon Ball is how similar Chi-Chi and Goku really are, they're both country bumpkins with a lack of social grace. It's much easier to see there why they're kind of made for one another. Doesn't help that the original DBZ anime makes her a lot worse than the manga, and a lot of that kinda shines through here, but it doesn't matter all that much, I suppose. This kind of starts the trend (one that you'll see repeated throughout Super) of how they kinda dumb Goku down to the point of him seeming obliviously stupid and obnoxious to those around him. compared to Z. For me personally, I don't mind it as much in more gag orientated episodes like these ones, but as you'll see it can get a bit eh, especially considering you just saw the Buu saga which is honestly Goku at his most serious.

ChiChi can be kind of insufferable, but it is worth remembering she's had it pretty rough. She had a husband who was brutally murdered by his alien space brother the day he took her son away to visit friends, and her son was then kidnapped by a Green slug man and she didn't see him for an entire year. Almost immediately afterwards, her son departed into space for months on end, and when her husband (now back from the dead) recovered from his wounds the very first thing he did was fly off after said son and then didn't come back. Years pass, and the next thing ChiChi knows is her husband is back home but he's taking her son (and the aforementioned Green Slug man) to train to fight some evil androids that could destroy the earth. And after coming to terms with that and giving her permission, she sees her husband - on television - give up fighting a giant bug monster and get her son to fight him instead. After all this finally, finally things seem to settle down (Despite her husband being dead. Again). But then Buu shows up, seemingly kills Gohan, and now ChiChi has to see her even younger son be put in harms way to fight Buu. Then she gets turned into an egg. Which isn't really anything to do with the narrative, but I just find it funny. ChiChi might seem overbearing and hard to deal with, but I think it's worth keeping mind that psychologically she has probably been royally FUCKED UP by everything that's happened to her family over the years thanks in large part to Goku's obsession with fighting. And the fact that she's be desperate to keep Pan as far away as possible from the battlefield isn't especially surprising.

Can you guys react to the Hazbin Hotel series ? It just got picked up on Amazon Prime

@Jennifer I wouldn’t even call her “insufferable.” Her stance makes sense. And Piccolo was the one to kill Goku. Just saiyan.

Chi chis way of thinking to my knowledge is typical for most asian families. Could be wrong but i remember hearing jokes about it back in the day :P

Shadowpunch13 This is typical Goku shenanigans. Goku in the Buu Saga was still pretty… If anything, I’d say Goku is more of a lunatic than anything. But in a good way (for a fictional character). His antics are welcome.

Yes this is very true especially chinese families, where Chi Chi's origin is from as well, which is more explained in the original Dragon Ball. Coming from an asian family myself a lot of their dynamic is relatable but Chi Chi was basically based off of the traditional old school chinese mother. Although me as a Goku stand i also don't blame Chi Chi for being the way she is. Yes it's Videl's decision but Chi Chi literally almost watched her son get murdered on live tv & lost Goku several times in battle. Chi Chi represents the human side of the show, i can't blame her for being paranoid when her husband is Goku lol

Maybe it's coming from a women's perspective but most of us female dragon ball fans love chi chi & i do think that as dragon ball continues, i'm starting to see way more of an understanding for chi chi. It's not like she's under low stress situations lol

People made a joke about it these days but that's how old school chinese parents teach their kids lol.

definitelynotdefinitive

It was a good way to put it in context of relationship. Husband. Son. Instead of names because it gives more weight to it. Like saying Goku got killed doesn't seem as tragic as Chi Chis husband. And calling Mr Piccolo a Green Slug also made it sound more intense and less endearing haha. 🤗

Seeing people being understanding with Chi Chi is heartwarming.
