Between Kirito mentioning he's emaciated and has asthma, and saying it was his moms idea to start coding, she likely forced him to give up kendo for his health. Judging by his playstyle in the games, he clearly still has a passion for swordfighting. It's probable that he thought Suguha sticking with kendo was just mocking him for doing what he couldn't.

Welcome to the wait with the rest of us! This episode stands right up there with episode 10 in terms of writing. They took what was a very awkward "romance triangle" with Suguha being Kirito's Cousin but also having a huge romantic crush on him, and instead turn it into a very real and relatable sibling drifting apart story. It works so much better this way too. There's a video out there that expresses the genius of SAO Abridged from 6 years ago and it still stands true to this day. It may be worth watching if you want to continue delving into SAO Abridged. If not! I look forward to the next Abridged Series you two react too! (Will there be a poll?) Cooomon Goblin Slayer!

QuanArt

Wow holy crap you might be right, after all the times I rewatched this that never clicked for me

While we wait for the next episode, any chance you would react to Smartphone Abridged, also by Something Witty Entertainment? It is a one-off. There will not be any more than the one episode, but it does have a satisfying ending. It could maybe take the SAO Abridged slot next Sunday?

Pebble

Yeah, one of the weak parts of the actual series are its bland/uninteresting characters. SWE is limited by the source material in what they can do, but one thing they have the most freedom to change are the characters, and they really make them great. Even the least important characters become very memorable in this abridged. For example those two employees using slug avatars. They got actual personalities.

Blaze

In the meantime I'd definitely recommend Project Mouthwash's abridged series. Fate Stay Night has some familiar voice actors (Kirito and Asuna). Also got the Bleach abridged if you fancy seeing Swords kill spirits

Death Comet

Any chance we can get goblin slayer abridged I believe it’s only 8 episode all completed also

Lord Fabulous

This makes a lot of sense. She was also really rough with him soon as he got back to it. Still can't figure out why she'd do that if she wanted him interested in it.

Lord Fabulous

I agree, though they'll probably be avoiding these anime abridges due to the copyright issues surrounding it. Goblin Slayer abridged also had those issues, after all. Would be curious to see them react to Avatar the Last Airbender though. No one seems to have copyright issues with that.

Lord Fabulous

I second this. Smartphone abridged was great. It'd just be nice for them to try out some great animes that aren't notorious for copyright take-downs. If Overlord abridged was still up on youtube, and if not for the copyright, that's another great one.

Lord Fabulous

I'm so glad you were able to take this journey with us. If you ever get around to watching Attack on Titan, the abridged episode by TFS is peak material.

Death Comet

True them copyright been hard lately but you avatar would be great also

Sarah

Definitely! Smartphone abridged is good, and I also recommend SWE's MHA abridged, there's 3 episodes out so far

Ryan

I'm guessing by the time we meet her she's already past the "try and get him to come back" phase and just accepted that he's a quitter.

Ryan

Lennon Drake (Suguha's VA) really put in work for that last scene! I've been looking forward to y'all reacting to this episode since y'all started the series. I'm not sure the proper way to request a reaction, but as others have mentioned, Explanation Point has an original vs abridged video for SAO season 1 and I think y'all would really like it! https://youtu.be/46jzSn9SLlg?si=93A6feQVw4xwXUhi this is part 1

This is the transcript for the full patch notes they were announcing: "The game'll be shuttin' down from 4am to 3pm for some scheduled maintenance. Once we're back, the following changes will be applied to our recent "Say No to Drugs" update. Terry the Tweaker Tarantula will no longer be handin' out free samples of LSD in the Arun town square. The movement speed bonus from the item "Crystal Meth" has been reduced from 200% to 150%. Magic Mushrooms will no longer allow the user to gaze beyond the veil of our fraudulent reality and caress the glistening abs of God himself. Cigarettes will no longer cause area-of-effect damage-over-time. Weed remains unchanged and awesome " (that is why Terry is now giving out hugs)

You should check out code ment

So, some lore here that I'm sure everyone has probably already said, but two major problem scenes were fixed by swe in this episode. Firstly, the SA scene with Asuna. I'd say it's at least alot better now, but that scene was in the original, a scene where these two slug monster SA'd asuna, and it was extremely tasteless. Secondly, that last argument was less about their bond as brother and sister, but actually about his sisters love for her brother. Basically, incest.

I love watching Bethany cringe at the same time that I did lmao. This is an amazing example of the voice work for the abridged series.

Matthew

I love how they did it in the abridged because it works so much better and it removes the cringe and the weird dialogue

Hawk of Battle

Yesss, finally, the episode we've all been waiting for. The Most Fixed episode ever award! So, in the original anime, the entire Alheim Arc as a whole is seen as pretty much the worst part of the whole show, and a large part of that is Suguha and Kiritos relationship. Basically, in that, they're not actually brother and sister, but cousins, who were raised AS siblings. And Suguha has an incestuous crush on him. She just about starts getting over this as she meets and travels with "Kirito", and starts to fall for him instead, not realizing, they're the same person. This episode is where it all comes to a head. It's weird, it's icky, it drags down the whole show and when Something Witty were tasked with the monumental effort of somehow portraying this mess, they were basically like, "what incest?" They threw the whole thing out, made it WAY more relatable and for this last scene in particular, even abandoned all comedy and played it totally straight. Everyone agrees this was a VAST improvement. And Suguhas VA absolutely kills it in that last scene, like holy shit! Can't wait for the next episode, whenever it falls. Hopefully sometime this decade. See you guys then!

Jan Negrey

I'd agree, but it requires knowledge of source material. It is fantastic Abridged, but without knowing what is in the background they will miss 90% of the jokes.

Jan Negrey

Except on some songs and some parts that you need to mute. Rare but happens.

To transcribe something important about MMO design from Ninja Kuma's reaction to this episode - specifically the tube room that spawns more enemies constantly - something Leafa calls "busted": (I do suggest you watch it in your own time - he has/had a solution to all those DMCA claims - and managed it): "It's called a gauntlet, the point isn't to kill them all, it's to progress to the end without anyone dying. You need multiple Tanks with good Aggro control, Healers with plenty Mana regen as well as enough DPS to keep the bloody mobs of the Healers". Tank - person in MMO who's sole purpose is to take hits for others. They usually have the most Health Points and best Armor and/or some equal method of avoiding/minimizing damage. Healers - obviously Heal another players. You need to protect them, so that they can do that for as long as necessary. DPS - Damage Per Second - category of players who's main job is to deal maximum amount of damage to the enemy per second. Varies quite a lot. Some are glass canons, some are more rounded, some are close quarters, some are ranged etc. Which is why it's even broader category that other 2 (though all 3 have their variety). Also when Kirito is "dead" he says he has Asthma. He probably quit Kendo due to that, but since it is a sign of weakness, he never said that to his Sister and certainly not to his Grandfather. That is why "It was Mom's idea to get me to learn coding" defense sounds so fake/ as an excuse. Month ago SWE's Community update was saying that SAOA episode 18 scripting is at 80%. Then comes the editing/recording and all that stuff. Since it is finale (probably), scripting part will be the hardest. Though there are also few scenes in that part that are nasty to edit. But it's equally possible we get something for new year as that we will get a present for next Halloween. Personally I think March/April.

Hercule Pyro

Ahh it's a shame that due to the demonetization you guys won't be carrying onto the OG series. SAO has a lot of problems, this arc in particular is for sure the worst of the bunch (cause the main conflict is Suguha develops feelings for kirito which... yeah, incest) thats why SAOA is so beloved as it fixes a lot of them. But later seasons still have a lot of fun moments and even stuff that pulls on your heartstrings. Oh well. If you're looking for another web series to dive into I'm gonna suggest Red vs Blue another Rooster Teeth series and the one that got them going.

Sumic

i would also love to see the explanation point video. there are two parts to it, and both are very good :)

Michael Nowicki

Yes code ment is another abridged show

XxKhaos VoidxX

After re-watching this I feel that episode 18 might be the final, the episodes are longer and the quality is outstanding. While the wait takes awhile I feel as though its worth it to let them cook :)
