It's worth noting you can play as your own character you create and all these people can be in your party, except for Dark Urge cause that's a custom character you make. Dark Urge allows you to make some really outrageous and bloody choices but you can also resist it. For a first playthrough I would honestly advise playing a custom character, or if you're playing multiplayer one of you can be an origin character..or you can both be custom. You'll still see everyone's backstories unfold in the game playing as a custom and you get to pick your race and class with it too

Shadowheart has probably the most fleshed out and interesting storyline, imo. Karlach is awesome too, but hoping for a DLC one day that goes a bit deeper with her background. Also you can have up to 4 characters (possibly including your own custom character(s)), and you can swap the character out at will. So you can do one's story line, then swap them and do another's. The game has a crazy amount of freedom, since you can also do most storylines without the main character of that line even being present.

I will join the others and recommend that you make a custom character first - it gives you a lot of room to expeirment and try out things.

Adding another voice saying that you should create custom characters - all of the origin characters are NPCs that can join you and have their own stories, so it really is best to make a custom character of your own to add to the party. Also, Dark Urge is customized character that you can play as, but the devs have stated that it is better to save it for a subsequent playthrough, but you don't have to.

You know Divinity Original Sin 2 has some character introductions alot like these, it may be a bit of an older title now, but still a good game AND made by Larian Studios who also made Baldur's Gate 3.
