Yes the actual motive behind Kayaba's plan was explained to the viewers as: "i dont even remember anymore". one of many reasons people prefer the abridged to the original

Ok this was one of the Best episodes. But the writing and storytelling get so much better from here on out. Especially in episode 17 the newest episode that released in May of 2023.

Lukas

17 was a masterpiece. writing, voice acting, Izzy's editing; all of them were on point.

SAOA is better than the original in everyway. I have heard good things about the alicization arc and from the first 4 episodes that i watched it seemed pretty good but for Season 1 the abridged is definitely the "Definitive Edition", as it were.

So this is one of those textbook examples of why SAO Abridged did it better. In the original, Kayaba's motivation literally was "I don't even remember anymore." So Ken nailed it on the head, it really was. Instead, SWE wrote Kayaba as the antithesis to the end point of Kirito's character journey. Had Kirito never gone through the journey he went through with Asuna, Balls, Tiffany, Lisbeth, and even Rosalla, he would have easily connected with Kayaba over their shared love of movies references. This is emphasized again with Kirito's failure to understand Kayaba's references to Dungeon Master, and Asuna instead referencing Star Wars. Showing that Kirito has connected with Asuna more than he ever could have with Kayaba. It's really well done and this episode is surely one of the reasons why SWE beat SAO proper into one of the best written abridged series. Thanks for the reaction!!

Kayaba literally explains his motivation in episode 1 of the anime but everyone conveniently forgets about it just because he mentions how long it's been since the game started.

Well yeah, but it’s such a shit evil villain motivation that nobody believes it’s the real one.

I love that at the catheter scene you can see him unconsciously go to protect the same area LMAO anyway 11 was so cute, the next few episodes im a big fan of especially 14-17. so good. can't wait.

As people above mentioned, this episode highlights how this series just felt better than the original. And I liked the original. But the part about this episode that always sticks in my mind is the "Fish Fucker" (that's his name in the credits). Considering the premise of this series, that character was, either, a PC, old man, who was stuck in the game with everyone else and decided to entertain himself with autoerotic asFISHiation, OR he was an NPC that Kayaba Akihiko, specifically, programmed to be there and fuck fish in front of players. And to be honest, I'm not sure which disturbs me more.

No Consequence

On the... bright? side, there's no way he could have ripped a catheter out just by limping along like that. But if he did before it was deflated, it would cause unimaginable damage 😌

Many people have mentioned the changes to make this ending better than the one we got in the original, but there's a fun little trivia bit that nobody has mentioned yet: When Kayaba said that at one point he thought he saw the face of god, he said it was the night janitor, Reki. SAO was created Reki Kawahara, so it was Kayaba seeing the creator of SAO.

Ken had the right idea when he said "Its better not to think about it." LMAO! You both caught so many important bits about the subtext this time. I also remember watching until the "add quarter" sound and thinking YESSSSS! You also have to remember that Sword Art Online has continued for multiple arcs past this one. This next arc is hard to work though because the source material was.... yeah..... rough. I hope you all continue until you are caught up because I really want to see your reaction to Asuna in the next arc!

Just joined from your sad post on You Tube. I'm glad I could watch it and see you reacting to that. As people mentioned - yes "I don't even remember" was something that original Kayaba Akihiko said. Which was very unsatisfactory to put it mildly. I can attest to "Crunch" when it comes to video games. You work until it's finished. Obviously there is now a huge backlash against studios that do it, but it still happens. Depending on the game last 2 months of game development are really hard. And said crunch might take 2 weeks to 2 months. And working 3 days straight on something is/was kind of normal. Obviously you cannot have "500 uninterrupted hours of consciousness" - unless you have very specific genetic mutation (which makes you so that you NEVER sleep) - your body and brain will shut down after approx. 200-260 hours without any sleep. The longest I managed was 171 hours (168 being exactly a week) without even a second that could count as a nap. But by day 5, I had severe hallucinations, I walked into buildings and didn't see buses etc. WITH inclusion of short time naps (so about 30 minutes), I was able to extend this to about 300 hours, but it's impossible to remember it. And it's very hard to make any decision and do any action. If you ever seen people in war movies that were sleeping during shelling or stuff like that - that is realistic. At some point you CAN'T not sleep. You will sleep everywhere. IDK how it is now, but about 15 years ago US Army manual did state that during War Time soldiers are expected to be on duty 40 hours out of 48. I remember that they did testing comparing pilots of helicopters that didn't sleep for 40 hours with and without Dexedrine (dextro-amphetamine) in their system and noticed that pilots with it were able to retain their accuracy in landing approx. 99% of the time (so margin of error really) vs. those that didn't have drugs supplied, which was - I don't remember exact numbers, but I'm certain that it differed by pilots and overall was much worse. Best crews were able to retain about 85% accuracy, but overall, I think it managed to fell down to like 40%. Which is why pilots and a lot of troops are supplied with stims. IDK if you ever plan to watch (or maybe you already did) Battlestar Galactica reboot from 2003/2004 - but this topic also comes up in it. If you didn't see it - it's one of the best (IMO) reboots ever. Decent show with great actors. And I generally despise reboots. For GREAT original series, I suggest Babylon 5. Show from the 90's that was sadly overshadowed by Star Trek DS9. I won't go into controversy who stole from who and whether there even was a theft of IP. DS9 and B5 are both great shows that are worth watching. Difference is that B5 is more focused and while it is in space it is less of a "utopia" that is in Star Trek. As for "Abridged Series" - maybe you could try "Unlimited Blade Works Abridged" by "Project Mouthwash"? Although if we're being honest, while it is great, it really only shines brightest when you watched the source material first. Unlike Sword Art Online Abridged that can be enjoyed without watching original... I'm not saying you can't, but you will lose so much more jokes and fixing plot holes etc. than in any other abridged. Ideally you'd want to watch (and react to maybe, but not on YT - for obvious reasons, since I'm here as well, due to those reasons) Ufotable's "Fate Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works" and maybe their "Fate: Zero" as well for context, prior to reacting to Abridged. I hope I was coherent, I'm in a way different time zone than you're but I've been awake since Sunday morning.... counting.... about 86 hours ago. I have to say since I've passed age of 35, it's been hard to go, even with assistance of coffee and similar "legal" stimulants, beyond 120 hours. Then again, I've been doing it for more than quarter of a century. Take Care and don't do reckless things like I do ;)

I absolutely love this series. As a gamer, once I stepped back and looked at sao for what it was meant to be, I couldn't stand the thought of how much of a mess of a game it really was within the story. Sao abridged managed to actually highlight every flaw of it and make it fun and even more realistic to how people would treat such a mess of a game. Something people don't pick up on there in the end when Asuna says "I know" is that it isn't just a Han Solo moment, but her truly acknowledging Kirito's feelings. Instead of making fun of him as they do with each other or saying it back, she lets him know that she knows he loves her. She knows and see him and accepts him wholeheartedly. It's absolutely beautiful writing for them as their relationship is absolutely one of the best teen relationship ever written in anything imo.
