As someone who went into FFXIV not knowing anything about the game, I also chose to start with Black Mage, and it's no understatement when + how many people tell you "it gets better every 10 levels". When I started (before they made some changes across all classes), the order you use your skills in changed drastically every 10-20 levels, and some skills you'd basically never use after a certain point. This is especially when you consider that other classes have a more natural flow that just progresses as you level them - most of your skills will have "evolved" and remain in your rotation once you get them. That said, once you do hit higher levels, your Black Mage rotation becomes simpler (until you end up forced to run a lower level dungeon or something and are forced to revert to those less satisfying rotations), your damage more potent, and you really feel like you're contributing. Whenever new content comes out, there's an immense feeling of satisfaction of being able to get through a brand new boss without dying somehow, because you didn't know what mechanics will let you continue casting spells and what would instantly kill you in your Ley Lines.
