Yang's father's name is Taiyang Xiao Long. So, Yang takes her last name "Xiao Long" from him, whereas Ruby's mother's name was Summer Rose, so Ruby prefers to use her mother's name, which is why she goes by Ruby Rose. And yes - a huge juxtaposition between Raven and Taiyang. the explanation that Yang gave Blake back in volume two was that Summer, Qrow, Raven, and Taiyang were all on a team together, just like team RWBY, and they all went to Beacon Academy. So, at one point in her life, Raven was a Huntress, got together with Taiyang, and had Yang. It's unclear whether Raven and Taiyang ever actually married or not. But then shortly after Yang was born, Raven left Taiyang and Yang behind, and (within the next year or so), he got together with Summer Rose and the two of them had Ruby (since Ruby was 15 when the show started and Yang was 17. It's not really a spoiler - the pieces are pretty well laid out - Raven is the leader of a tribe of bandits. The same ones that attacked the destroyed village we saw in Chapter 2 of this volume. The bandits attacked, caused all sorts of panic and chaos, and then ran away and shortly after the bandits left, the Grimm arrived and finished destroying the village. What Raven just implied in this chapter is that both she and Qrow were raised as bandit children, as part of their tribe, until they were old enough to attend Beacon. But then at some point after they graduated, Qrow made the decision to stay a Huntsman, and apparently when Raven left, she returned to the tribe that raised her and she is now the leader of the bandits. I love your reaction to Taiyang and Yang's conversation in the kitchen. Most of the reactors I watch are horrified at Taiyang's joke, and don't think it's a sign that he really understands Yang's needs, but I think you're right - it was exactly what she needed to hear. And having the professors there to assure her was something else she needed to hear. They're also Huntsmen, and have presumably seen injuries like hers before, and they didn't treat her any differently then they had in class.

Raven is the leader of the bandits that slaughtered the town the dying Huntsman spoke of

There's definitely a lot to unpack in this episode. Yang still having nightmares about Adam, and finally realizing that she needs to stop pouting and pick herself back up. Taiyang is a great dad, he's been through so much headache and it's amazing that he still keeps a positive outlook. I love the way Qrow called out Raven on her BS, The fact that Raven didn't even ask about Yang or mention her own daughter pretty much tells you everything you need to know about her as a mother.

Regarding Ozpin - ill just say you will find out, that is all. But yes, lot going on this episode, personally...ive always felt that S4 is kinda...slow? low energy? we need moar rwby each month :P

Yeah it lets you know right away that Raven doesn't have her priorities straight. Surprised that she even intervened to save her daughter the one time.

definitelynotdefinitive

It feels like a lot of setup. But also we are getting some good character development. 😀 Just not as much action especially since Season 3 was all action due to the tournament.
