Animals in Avatar universe are usually "hybrids" so hogmonkeys are a real thing. It's rare when an animal isn't a hybrid (yall will see one next season) Also, yes , Uncle Iroh did redirect lightning, a technique he invented.

Something that I only really thought about upon a second or third viewing is that there’s a slightly even darker tone to Zuko’s punishment than they explain outright. If you remember in the first episode Iroh says to Zuko “Even if the Avatar is out there you won’t find him. Your father, grandfather and great grandfather all tried and failed.” Under that context we can assume that Zuko was not ever meant to return. The Fire Lord gave him a task that, in the Fire Lord’s mind, should’ve been an impossibility to complete.
