While I admit that I find this episode as just ok, I can't deny how important it is. This is the first episode to really look into how dark they can go. Yes, we had the Southern Air Temple showcasing an entire genocide, but that was 100 years ago and can be viewed in the eyes of history. Here, though, we have an an active plan to wipe out an entire village of innocence. True, there are Fire Nation in there and they're likely not great people, but it's still a civilian village. Witnessing, live, an attempt to commit an atrocity like that is much darker (arguably) and shows that they're not afraid to show how far down a character can sink and the effect war has on people.

The show strikes a wonderful balance in dealing with heavy topics while still keeping light comedy, and using a cast of kids actually acting their age. And because they are acting their age, they have so much growing to do as their journey shapes them.
