I think it's interesting that the CES hardware was worse, but this isn't why it wasn't in stores and there wasn't coverage Because it was in stores and there was coverage The N-Gage's Kiosk tells you that it had significant presence in stores. Nokia arranged for those Kiosks and the stores had many units on hand. You say "the only demonstration unit in the entire city I lived in", but nearly every GameStop and EB in my area had an N-Gage. Which is at least 2 Per mall and 1 in many mini-malls. I assume you were in Canada, and cell phone the availability may have been different than in the US. And this article: https://www.gamespot.com/amp-articles/nokia-says-n-gage-launch-a-success/1100-6077184/ So, this should tell you how much presence the system had with retailers. Nokia had not put 400k unit in consumer hands, but this number likely matched the orders retailers put in, and 400k is pretty good. Also, I'm pretty sure If you followed the gaming news, you were likely to be aware, so I can't say why you weren't. The unit was obviously announced a year before and there was coverage on and off up until release, as seen by the presence of the Gerstmann clip. Here's IGN a month before: https://www.ign.com/articles/2003/09/12/the-ultimate-n-gage-faq and IGN on launch: https://www.ign.com/articles/2003/10/08/n-gage-launch https://www.ign.com/articles/2003/10/09/launch-lineup-reviewed (there are similar Gamespot articles, but there are some date issues). This clearly wasn't the GBA release, or the PSP release, there's evidence of a big release.
