Tools like DALL-E Mini can produce some really amusing results for your social media feed, but their more powerful brethren can produce very convincing images of things that never happened.

Let me put a different spin on this. I’ve been working with AI models that attempt to fix images, either by removing defects or upscaling the images, etc. (ESRGAN is the name of the underlying framework). The intention is to make the image more impressive and clean-looking. I built custom models based on footage from the Super Mario Bros Super Show. The animation models work very well, almost as if the original 16mm footage had been transferred onto early analog HD tape. Now, what happens if someone uses that model (which also seems to work well on other animated shows) to upscale a frame or footage of a show to start a rumor the show is getting a HD remaster? The footage isn’t fake in the traditional sense, but it would be using it in a dishonest way. Let’s go in another direction. There’s nothing to stop a company tasked with remastering a TV show from going through the same process I did (my model relies almost exclusively on footage from the show, and I can go into more detail if you’re interested), assuming the show rights holder is fine with this approach, would it be okay to put the resulting footage on a streaming service and label it as HD? What if it was sold as a digital download? What about Blu-ray Disc?
