I used to record Later with Jools Holland (BBC live music show) on to VHS in the 90s and early 2000s. When I watched it back I recorded my favourite live sessions onto minidisc. The sound quality was very good, even today, those minidisc sound good.

You can get an okay refurbished 80’s/90’s cassette deck with new belts for about $100-200. A high-end model will cost hundreds or into the $1000+ range, but I wouldn’t call it especially expensive if you just want something decent.
