Really interesting take. Another reason might be ingredients, parts or whole mechanisms that are being made by one remaining manufacturer. For instance, the infamous Tanashin cassette mechanism, or when The Impossible Project weren't able to source the chemicals for their revamped Polaroid-compatible film, etc. When things fall out of fashion, the number of players in the game is shrinking, leading to either inferior products and/or scarcity. It's only natural. You can't really complain about it.
