Kelly gave me a concerned look through the open window of the mini-van and asked, "Are you sure you want to do this?"
"I'm sure," I replied. I knew she could feel my grim determination through our link as easily as she could hear it in my voice. "Just cover for me with Tegan, and if you're going to watch make sure not to let anything leak back to Katie. I doubt she'd be happy if she found out what I'm up to."
Me and Kelly both knew our little sister didn't want revenge, and she definitely wouldn't approve of what I had planned. I had a feeling Tegan might not approve of my plans either. Then again, maybe she would. After all, she messed up that corrupt government minister a week and a half ago. She called it taking care of business, and that's what I was going to do this evening.
My twin sighed, "Just be careful ok?"
I smiled, "I'll be fine. He's just a human."
Kelly responded through our link, /A human cop. He'll be armed, and he's a predator. He'll probably be cautious, if not paranoid./
I sighed, /I know. And that's the other reason I have to do this. Not just for revenge, but to make sure he doesn't do it again. Katie probably wasn't his first, and she wouldn't be the last. Now enough stalling, you head on home. I'll see you there after it's over./
"Ok Keira, see you later." Kelly rolled the window up as she pulled away.
We were downtown, we'd spent the day at university catching up on things. She was going to drive home and tell Tegan I stayed late because I had some extra research I wanted to finish up before the weekend, and I'd teleport home when I was done.
As Kelly drove off I turned and walked away from the parking lot. It's true I'd been doing a lot of research lately, but it had nothing to do with my university program. I was tracking down the man who attacked Kaitlyn last summer. Now I knew who he was and where he lived. I also knew his schedule, and he wasn't due home from work for another three hours.
I was in no hurry, so rather than a risky teleport jump to an unfamiliar location I just took public transportation. Fifteen or twenty minutes on the subway, then forty-five minutes on the bus got me to the right neighbourhood.
As I walked along the suburban street I realized I'd been here before. They say it's a small world. The cop who assaulted Kaitlyn lived around the block from the place where Tegan lived six years ago. I actually walked past the house with her basement apartment on my way to my target's home.
My pace was slow as I walked past the cop's house. I took note of the area, the location, the yard at the side of the house, and what I could see of the living-room through the front windows. Ten minutes later my walk brought me into a small park, and from there I found some cover then teleported directly into the cop's home.
I slipped on a pair of white gloves, they were from the museum and we used them for handling delicate exhibits. They'd keep me from leaving any fingerprints. It was an extra precaution, I wasn't really that worried about the human authorities. Still, we'd just put an end to one police investigation, I didn't want to get involved in another.
I had two hours or so before I expected my quarry to return home, and I spent that time carefully searching the place. It didn't take long to find the evidence. I figured a guy who'd go after someone like Kaitlyn would have a thing for kids, and I was right.
Finally I found some wine in the fridge and helped myself to a glass, then I settled down to wait.
A couple hours later I was just finishing my third glass of wine when the guy got home. It was dark out and I was sitting relaxed on the sofa in his front room. I had a good buzz on from the wine, but when I saw the headlights of his car pull into the driveway I felt a little surge of adrenaline that cleared my head.
A few moments later the front door opened and the guy came in. He closed and locked the door behind him, and set the security chain.
He didn't even notice me as he hung his keys on a hook by the door, then trudged past the room where I was waiting and into the kitchen. I heard him get himself a drink, then he came out of the kitchen and into the front room. He pulled the curtains closed with one hand as he held his glass in the other. He wasn't in uniform, I assumed he got changed into his civvies at the station when his shift ended.
I quietly cast a shield spell in front of me as I watched him. I knew even if he wasn't in uniform he might still have a gun on him, and I wasn't going to take any chances.
Once he had the curtains drawn he turned and flipped on the light, then froze in his tracks as he stared at me.
"Who the fuck are you?" he demanded in a deep loud voice. He sounded like the kind of guy who enjoyed shouting at people. "And what the fuck are you doing in my home?"
I smiled at him, though there wasn't any joy or warmth in my expression. "Constable Fisher, I've been waiting for you."
His eyes flicked up and down over me, and he spotted the empty wine glass on the side table next to me and the white gloves on my hands. He transferred the glass of what I took to be scotch from his right hand to his left, then reached around behind him under his jacket and produced a gun.
He pointed it at me and demanded, "I asked you a question. Who the fuck are you?"
I got to my feet and he took a step back. He kept the gun pointed at me, but I wasn't concerned. My shield remained up, anything he sent my way would be stopped a good half-meter in front of me.
"Who am I?" I repeated his question as I smiled coldly at him. "I'm the big sister of a kid you assaulted last summer. One of the kids you assaulted last summer. I'm here for revenge. And I'm going to be your new worst nightmare."
I took a step towards him and he took another step back. He was still holding his gun pointed at my chest, but I could tell he was uneasy. I figured there was something unsettling about facing down a young woman who wasn't afraid of him, who didn't bat an eye about having a gun aimed at her.
Fisher was a tall, strong-looking man in his mid-forties. I'd guess he was about six-foot-two, and probably weighed around two hundred pounds. He had short dark hair, with some streaks of grey at the temples. He also had a short dark neatly-trimmed moustache, and his skin had a tanned complexion. His eyes were dark, and he was dressed in blue jeans, a t-shirt, and a spring jacket. He had black polished boots on his feet.
Even in civilian clothes, the boots and haircut gave the guy away as a cop. He looked like the kind of guy who enjoyed using his size and strength to intimidate people, and he probably used his badge and gun the same way. He liked having power over people, especially folks who were already weak and helpless. Kaitlyn wouldn't have had a chance against this guy even without the things my spell did to her.
I took another step forward and he took one more step back.
He warned me, "Come any closer and I'll shoot."
For effect he thumbed the safety on the gun.
"You'd shoot an unarmed woman?" I taunted him. "How courageous of you."
/Keira stop playing around, just get it over with and come home./
I sighed and rolled my eyes, /Give me a minute Kelly, I'm just getting to the fun part./
Fisher was still holding his drink in his left hand. He took a gulp of it then smiled, "You know when my buddies show up they're going to find a gun next to you and drugs on you. It's a tragedy really, an attractive young woman like you throwing her life away on drugs, and breaking into the wrong house."
Kelly was still with me, I could feel her watching through my eyes. She was right though, I'd wasted enough time. The next spell I cast was another of Kaitlyn's old favourites, though it was one both Kelly and I knew our little sister would never dream of using again.
I took control of the cop's body. His smug expression turned to confusion as he put the glass down on a shelf beside him, then confusion became horror as he turned the gun on himself. His heart-rate probably doubled as he felt the cold steel of the barrel pressing against his right temple.
My expression was as cold as the gun, I wasn't smiling any more. I looked him in the eyes and stated "You have exactly one move left, Fisher. Die on your feet as a man, or take what's behind door number two. Three seconds to decide, before that finger twitches. Three..."
He didn't even waste one second before he started begging. "No! Please don't kill me!"
My smile returned and I said, "Door number two it is."
I had him lower the gun and place it on the shelf next to his glass. I also had him take his phone out of his jacket pocket and leave that on the shelf as well.
With the danger passed I dispelled my shield, then I guided him past me to the sofa and had him sit down where I'd been relaxing earlier.
Once he was comfortably seated I picked up the gun. I unloaded it, then stuffed the magazine in my pocket and tucked the gun into my belt. I actually had a collection of these things now. I had the two I'd taken from MacRae a few weeks back, along with the one I took from his mistress.
Fisher sat there staring at me, his eyes were still wide with fear and he asked in a panicky voice "What the fuck is going on? Why can't I move?"
"Don't worry about that," I replied calmly. "I'll let you go once I'm done. Just try and relax, this is the fun part."
He tried to respond but I took control of his mouth and had him shut up for now. His eyes showed the ongoing panic he was experiencing as he sat completely still and silent.
I idly wondered if he would have taken the bullet if he knew what the alternative was. I still liked to call it the Liam option, even though Tegan admitted she only ever meant that to be a temporary thing. It wasn't going to be temporary today, not for Fisher.
I prepared the spell in my mind then smiled at him again, "All right Fisher. Here comes door number two. You like little girls, now you get to be one."
He just stared at me in fear and confusion as I cast the spell. I watched as his body was engulfed in a column of swirling light. It only lasted a couple seconds then the light faded and revealed his new form.
His new body had the same sort of build as my little sister; small, short, slim, slightly-built. He was five feet tall if he was lucky, he'd lost over a foot in height. He'd also lost at least a hundred pounds. His hair was still dark but now it was long, it probably reached down to the small of his back. Age-wise he looked around fifteen or sixteen.
I still had control over his body, so there weren't any screams or panicked cries yet. His clothes were unchanged, but they were ridiculously oversized now.
He was still staring at me with wide eyes, and he probably had no idea yet what just happened. He'd know something changed, he'd know the room and his clothes felt different now. He might have even realized I seemed taller than I did a minute ago.
/Cute,/ Kelly commented. /Are you going to do anything else? Some mind magic, perhaps?/
I answered with a question, /Do you think I should?/
My twin responded, /I would. I'd make him appreciate his new looks, make him accept it./
I thought that over for a few moments but decided against it. /I'm going to leave his mind as-is. Let him get used to it on his own./
My attention returned to my victim as I stated, "Ok Fisher, I'm going to release you in a moment then be on my way. First I've got some advice for you, and I strongly suggest you pay close attention."
"You'll need a new name, so think about that. You'll also need clothes. And you won't be able to stay here indefinitely, sooner or later people will come around looking for the old you. If they find you here they'll probably suspect you broke in or something. Another option, you could claim to be one of your own victims. Tell folks Constable Fisher kidnapped you and was keeping you here as his prisoner? That'll get you a lot of sympathy and might give you a way out of this mess. If you try telling people who you used to be or what happened to you they'll probably send you to a psych ward for a while, so I'd suggest avoiding that subject."
I focused on my twin through our bond, and had my teleport spell prepared. I'd be able to jump home the moment I was ready. I finally released Fisher from my control spell, then just watched him for a few seconds.
His eyes were still wide with fear as he looked down at himself. I saw the realization play out over his expression as he ran his small delicate fingers through his long dark hair, while his other hand dug into his loose pants to check what was down there.
He looked almost as frightened as he did when I had the gun at his head. He stared wide-eyed at me as he gasped, "No! It can't be! This isn't possible!"
Of course his voice fit the rest of him. Soft, quiet, high-pitched, girly.
I smiled at him and stated, "Have fun."
Through Kelly's eyes I could see she and Tegan were in the backyard with our sept, sitting around the fire-pit again. I teleported into our bedroom so I could ditch the gloves and put the gun away before I joined the others.
