Such a great movie - watched it quite a few times over the years :D Agree with the two distinct halves so to speak part - the latter felt a bit too much like director self-gratification to be honest. The first one the most gripping/fun and from what I have heard somewhat accurate for how things were done in those days. (was most likely even worse in reality some places)

I watch the first half and drop out on a regular basis. I only watched the second half this time because I was along for the ride with you. The first half of the movie gave us a main character, Pyle. They didn't give us enough Joker or Cowboy to invest in for the second half. It's bad writing to put the two together. Hell, I'd rather watch Pyle as a kid growing up being bullied and overcoming it and gaining friends in school. He becomes a respected kid, not smart, but still a "part of the team" for a group of misfits or something. Then he comes to Basic with this movie's first half and ending it there. I don't see anything particularly good about the second half at all except Animal Mother and a man with his snake. Write the first half of the movie about their growth and dependence on each other where Animal Mother's racism gets broken down, but he keeps up the act and change the end of the 2nd half to have Animal die saving Eightball and being remembered as the finest racist he'd ever known. Drop all the Joker and propaganda crap and you'd have another good movie.
