I feel much the same as you - it’s fun, but doesn’t hold a candle to the first one. I kind of view both of them as Agatha Christie stories for the modern age, and comparing these to those, I would say that Knives Out would be in the top five, whereas Glass Onion is just solidly mid-tier. I also agree that the biggest deciding factor which put the first one a cut above was the character of Marta, who acted as such an effective source of tension and vehicle for the audience. I think Rian Johnson attempted to do something similar with Helen in this film, but it didn’t entirely work for me. I also agree that the film could be trimmed down, although personally, the place where I found it really lagging was not the first hour on the island, but towards the end when we spent AGES going back over all the same scenes from the beginning of the film. By doubling back on itself for such an extended period of time, I felt like the film killed quite a bit of the momentum it had built up, and it got rather tedious rewatching so many of the same scenes. I also found it difficult to really feel stakes in that sequence, as we know that nothing will happen to Helen until later. Still, it was fun, and I appreciated how clever it was. I’m down for more of these, even if they never again reach the heights of Knives Out.

This one’s a good ole time. I’m also a bigger fan of the first one, but I’m genuinely stoked about this as a franchise. Lots of options, tons of mysteries, and good ole fun
