I preferred The Lighthouse by a LOT. It had two top notch performances of characters that were compelling, interesting, etc. In this one, the characters don't seem to have anything more than superficial traits. I suppose I like a story about a family that fails a young girl so much that she has to turn to join the witches' coven but truly this was a bit of a shit show. The parents/siblings failures were "meh". Sure, I love the atmosphere, but not enough of substance happens. For the most amazing of his films, turn to The Northman. It's far and away the best of his work.

Wow, that was not what I was expecting. This and Hereditary are straight horror, their just not cheap, not many jump scares etc. Anna Taylor Joy is always amazing but everyone killed it. They had no chance of living the moment they left. Tho idk what’s with “elevated,” horror and killing kids.

I feel like you have the mirror image of my tastes. I will agree that the Lighthouse has the best performances out of any of his movies. But to me Northman was the most eh of his movies (with the exception of a few beautiful moments). The Witch is the only movie that I really loved as a narrative. Whereas The Lighthouse is more about mood and characters then knowing what’s going on in any real sense.
