Unbeheld

Thought this movie would be a different experience. The reason why the cinematography is so gorgeous is because the director is famous for them and this was his first foray into a martial arts/action movie. He's known for making great dramas like "in the mood for love". This was probably why the pacing was so off. Believe it or not the unedited monstrosity is supposedly 8h long, and there was fierce dispute in the editing room which led to the movie being a mess in that regard (like the Razor storyline that went nowhere in this cut). While Kung Fu Hustle was an homage in comedic form to legendary martial arts actors, this movie was an homage to really old actual kung fu that is still very much present in China. Of course the effects have been grossly exaggerated into wire fu like Crouching Tiger. But the reason why the choreo looked so clean is because the main actors spent over a year training under various masters of these arts so their kata forms looked crisp on camera. Interestingly enough, all the martial arts featured in this movie are also prominently displayed under various fighting games, so the moves also looks quite familiar as they are signature moves of those styles. Surprised you picked this one as I think "the outlaws" would be very much more your alley in terms of entertainment (think of the man from nowhere kind of movie), or the greatest Asian gangster movie nobody saw "new world". Still, the grandmaster was a very pretty martial arts movie even if the story made no sense :D
