Interesting that you didn't "buy" Jax wanting out of the club when it's been pretty consistent throughout the show so far. First season: he struggled with where the club was going and wanted change Second season: he almost went Nomad to get some distance to the club Season three: he literally lets his baby go, believing that it was better for his own son to not be in his life and said that "his son won't have to come home to a dad who tortured and murdered a guy yesterday." He also shouted out in anger/frustration: "I don't belong in this life!" - This all only flipped shortly after due to the shock of seeing the adoptive parents getting killed and blaming himself for it in addition to the news of Tara's pregnancy. Both his brain and his heart have been saying the same thing since the beginning: he wants out of organised crime. Circumstances/happenings and emotions always pull him back for a short while but he always comes back to the fact that his life is a fucking blood bath and that it isn't what he wants his life to be. After being locked up for 15 months and having the time to sit on his thoughts for that long...he'll obviously be more certain than ever that he really wants out. Whether he will actually be able to without getting pulled back by a sense of responsibility in regards to things that could happen or is actually strong enough to not lose sight of his true (long term) motivation regardless of what happens right in front of him is another thing altogether, of course. But he most definitely wants out.

It's nice how you bring up Jax's "long term planning" and Clay's complete disregard for it. It makes sense, right? Jax's motivation is future oriented. He wants out and a better life for his family. Whereas Clay's just wants to make the most of now because he's about to "retire". What both have in common: they don't give two fucks about the club anymore. Clay never actually cared for the club but about money and power and he cared about the well being of the club bc it was his source for it. But now that he's retiring he could not care less if the entire club went up in smoke the second he stepped down. Jax did care about the club which is why he wanted to change it but now is just tired of it and wants to leave - so also stopped caring about the future of the club. Clay was always a scumbag but what changed was that Jax started to do things like backing Clay's greedy and reckless decisions because he doesn't care about the club's best interests anymore. As Bobby said: Jax came out of jail a changed man. This is what changed. The guy who challenged Clay head on for years to make the club business safer suddenly didn't care anymore.
