The original voice actor for Iroh was Mako Iwamatsu. He passed away from esophagus cancer in 2006, part-way through recording his lines for Book 2 of Avatar. Greg Baldwin took over the role for a handful of lines in Book 2, all of Book 3, and Korra. He does a pretty good impression, but I can definitely hear the difference. The reason you didn’t notice until now is probably just because of how sparingly he was used in Book 3. The character of Mako in Korra was named in honor of Mako the actor. There was also a dedication to him in S2E15, The Tales of Ba Sing Se, right after Iroh sings “Leaves from the Vine” at his son’s memorial (which was one of the last things Mako recorded).
