The idea that Korra is supposed to remain neutral in the conflict never made sense. I mean, that point was floated by Unalaq, who obviously has ulterior motives. Not to mention, it's not like Aang said "you know, I really can't choose a side in this war against the fire nation! Sure, they started the conflict and invaded, but I have to be neutral!" So Mako talking like that's what she should be doing here has *always* annoyed me. EDIT: Also, it didn't really occur to me until you were saying it, but it is very hypocritical of Mako to be all okay doing this under the table operation - working with known criminals - but got all up on his high horse about following the law with Korra when she was literally trying to save her people.

Mako is just a poorly written character. If not for how sleazy he is (and barely called out for it), or how hypocritical he is (and barely called out for it), or just how generic his backstory, etc. The fact that he's named after the legendary VA for Iroh is honestly insulting. Bolin is poorly written as well but he's got comedy going for him I guess. Mako on the other hand is just irritating.
