Obviously it pains me greatly to have to agree with Marcus... but I do think that Nicholas Cage can act "well" when he "wants" to. His performance in Leaving Las Vegas was phenomenal. One of my favourite performances of all time. I'm sure it helped that he was acting opposite Elisabeth Shue, who also gave one of my favourite performances of all time in that film, but, regardless, I thought he was jaw-droppingly good in it.

I haven't seen this one in a few years but I remember loving it.

I agree. Cage is actually a really good actor. He rightfully won the oscar for Leaving Las Vegas in my opinion. I also really liked his performance in Matchstick Man, Adaptation, and Lord of war. Even his overacting in his other movies is very entertaining. But he's a really good actor if he's in a project he cares about.

Have to agree. He is typecast A LOT, like many are, because production wants that actors "brand", which reinforces expectations and on and on it goes. Two of my biggest movies where actors go "against type" were Adam Sandler in "Reign over me" and Jim Carrey in "The Majestic". Not saying their other movies got better because of it, but branding them as "overactors" doesn't sit well with me anymore. They know what they are doing and more importantly why.
