I love Korra because she's the opposite of Aang. Aang was naturally passive and always tried to avoid conflict. Korra actively seeks conflict out and faces it head on. I like that Korra isn't just waterbender Aang, she's a very different person and has her own issues because of that

Some fun new additions to the voice cast! Amon is voiced by Steve Blum, aka dub Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop and Mugen from Samurai Champloo. Amon's electric-baton-wielding leutenant is Lance Hendrickson, who you have seen in a billion things...for instance as the synthetic Bishop in Aliens. Inventor of the automobile ("Satomobile") and Fire Ferret sponsor Hiroshi Sato is Daniel Dae-Kim, aka Jin from Lost. Mako, the firebending brother, is named after actor Mako Iwamatsu, the deceased original voice of Iroh. He is voiced by David Faustino, aka Bud the son from 90s sitcom Married with Children! Tarrlok is voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, who has done hundreds of voices you've heard, he's one of those guys. He also voices all the animals in the show (Naga the polarbeardog, Pabu the Fire Ferret, and Oogi the sky bison) plus dozens of other add'l voices. The Korra breakdown is easy to get emotional during because it's just so relatable, especially her denial and overcompensation. It's a very real and grounded reaction she has to fear, despite the narrative cause being so fantastical: the masked man is going to take away my superpowers. But especially her feeling like a fraud: she's specifically afraid of losing her powers, which are natural (despite training) and in her mind unearned, because she feels she is nothing without them. She has no sense of self worth outside of her superior and their ability to do physical harm, despite her bravado. Very relatable kind of insecurity. And Jimmy, Meelo (the young son of Tenzin) gets better, but I agree: his potty humor antics are mostly unfunny to me too, and they are all he is in these early episodes, but he's used sparingly and gets funnier lines. The girls never bothered me, though...the motormouth Ikki and bookish Jinora I dig.

Meelo is my least favorite part of season 1. He is too slapstick and gets annoying. Luckily they realized this and he honestly gets way better. By the later seasons I genuinely enjoy him, he actually becomes funny.

Reaction Junkie

I just noticed that the same actor for the Mauler Twins from Invincible plays the security guard who let the avatar and mako into the arena. Small world haha

I had no idea how Jimmy would react to most of Korra Book 1, but I did have one note prepared ahead of time: "Will obviously love slimy Councilman Tarrlok." Manipulative bastards ftw. Say what you will about a lot of it, but one edge Korra consistently has over ATLA is in the villain department (for the most part). Ozai was the perfect obstacle for Aang's story, but beyond that was barely one-dimensional (must literally burn down world 'cause evil). Amon, even in his first appearances, is obviously a physical threat, but conceptually threatens specifically Korra's world, and does so while honestly making a lot of really fair points about inequality. Then you have Tarrlok, who is obviously antagonistic to Tenzin and slimy overall, but also seems to genuinely be working for the greater good from his perspective, even if his greater priority will always be his own power. Even mustache henchman has a lot of interesting character nuances.

Drew

Literally every villain in Korra is more compelling than Ozai.
