Generally agree with how you felt about the season. It was sub par for Justified standards but still very good compared to most shows. I think the best of this season is still fantastic but there are lows. I feel like by the end of the season I would just kind of just sigh every time Ava and the prison sub plot would come on screen. Another reason it felt it a little strange is because they originally had bigger plans for the Haitian, but there were contract disputes so he had to get written off early. Darryl Crowe is pathetic to begin with but does eventually grow to be competent enough. The accent stays horrible. I may have mentioned this in another comment, but for comparison, the actor for Dewey Crowe is Australian and doesn't stick out at all. Rappoaport was just lazy with it I think. Season 6 is probably my favourite (its almost impossible to pick just one, though) so looking forward to you getting stuck into it.

I think S5 is ok. I think the big error was having the Crowes be the seasonal bad guys instead of Johnny or even Picker. The Ava plot line drags less than I remember since it begins a ways in and knowing the payoff makes the sheer misery of it feel earned. Again, the shows saving grace is its occasional case of the week episodes which break up the story nicely. If it was all serialized Crowes this season would be unwatchable.

yeah the haitian was going to be the original big bad of the season, but the actor didn't like how the part was after a few episodes so asked to be written off so they killed him. They had to scramble to rewrite the season after that. Its not a terrible season but it stands out compared to the rest of the show.

Season 5 is the weakest season. Season 6 is one of my favorites but I won't say why right now. When I first figured out that Ava was snitching on Boyd I thought it was unrealistic however my mind changed Season 6. Can't wait.
