Ninaofthe90s

This movie has everything. It's funny, it's heartbreaking, brutal, cute, suspenseful, has awesome and memorable characters, and it has phenomenal performances. It's one of Gary Oldman's best I think, but since I think he's the greatest actor ever, he has so many performances that I consider his best. Maybe this and Dracula. I mean...he's so versatile...it's hard for me to imagine that THIS is the same guy that played Gordon in The dark knight trilogy. 🤣 Also Natalie Portman gives one of the greatest child performances I have ever seen. She was only 12 years old here and this was her first movie and no wonder she had such a great career after this. And yes this movie is directed by Luc Besson, the man who also directed The fifth element. It has some of his traits - and of course Gary Oldman plays the villain in both of them. Something funny I noticed is (spoiler for the fifth element!) that he dies the same way in both of these movies. In this one he says "shit" and then the bomb explodes and in the fifth element he says "oh no" and then the bomb explodes. Hardly a coincidence 😂

I voted for the director's cut. Hell I suggested this movie in the first place as a director's cut and I don't regret it. Listen, if something would've happended between the two of them, of course I would not have suggested it. This movie would be banned if something like that happened. But as Jimmy said, I think it built upon them as characters and showing us a weird and at the same time sweet relationship between a girl that had to grow up way too fast and a man who was in many ways a big child. I am also trying to see it from the perspective of a twelve year old. It happens sometimes at that age that you have a crush on someone way older and don't particularly understand why it is wrong. Léon I think knows very well that's it wrong, he's just not very articulate and probably can't express it the way he wants to. So yes i understand of course why those scenes had to be cut for the cinema, but I prefer this cut to the theatrical release. Also this movie feels way to short without the extra twenty minutes in my opinion.

I stole this from imdb: The green and yellow capsules Stansfield takes is Librium, a sedative and hypnotic medication of the benzodiazepine class; it is used to treat anxiety, insomnia and withdrawal symptoms from alcohol and/or drug abuse.

One of my favorite movies with an excellent score. Think La Femme Nikita (1990) is from the same company, also a very good movie.

What a great film. Initially I was against watching the DC but, I have to say, after seeing that version again (for only the second time), I'm glad you picked it. For me, previously, the "ring trick" introduction seemed so forced and nonsensical and cringey that I immediately swore off the DC permanently (reactionary much?) Although that still doesn't make sense to me, there's so much other good stuff in this version that I agree it's the better choice overall. I can never decide if my favourite Gary Oldman performance is here or in True Romance (or Dracula, I suppose, but Keanu Reeves ruins that movie for me.) Regardless, he's fucking great in it. His delivery of "EV-ERY-ONE!" is fucking priceless (and was a one-off, which the director loved.) And surely his "Shit.", in the end, is a challenger to Jerry's "Oh, geez." for understatement of the year! :) Regarding the missing drugs, and money under the floorboards, my understanding was always that Matilda had pilfered the coke in order to use it and sell it herself (before she leaves to get Leon milk, which ends up saving her life, her nose is bleeding... I presume from doing some of the pilfered coke.) Totally random piece of trivia here, which I'm not sure why I remember: The rasta guy, Willi One Blood (who isn't given a character name, they just call him Willi or Blood) actually sang one of the songs on the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack. Weird. Btw, totally unrelated to that, the music cue given to his entrance (sleigh bells?) before the family is slain is fucking gold. Eric Serra killed the soundtrack here. Danny Aiello's reaction to being told that Leon came and got Matilda from Stan's building, in the middle of the fucking day, was some next-level acting. How do you show such profound shock/surprise (on a guy that probably NEVER gets shocked) by only moving a couple of muscles like a 1/4 inch?!? I dunno, but he does it. There's so much to love in this film. I could talk about it for days :)

How can reeves ruin the movie for you. He's not even in it that much. Gary oldman puts everyone to shame with his Performance and it's the only thing I ever think about when I watch it. While I am a keanu fan in his other roles, I agree that he was horribly miscast.- the positives ourweighs the negatives so much, nothing would ever have the power to ruin it

Shit, I almost forgot: Jimmy, spill the beans on your off-broadway experience!! Also, regarding Matilda telling the innkeeper that Leon's her lover: I always thought that was just her being bored and trying to cause trouble. She does it so over-the-top, complete with an overly dramatic finger wave goodbye, that it always struck me as just a game for her. Finally: "I was like 'Who's trying to sabotage this channel?'" Okay, now THAT was funny, Cash :) edit: Dammit, one more thing. There are so many great shots in the film, as you guys mentioned. One of my favourites is just after Stan first enters the family's apartment and misses a shot at the teenage daughter. He keeps moving forward (with the camera backing up), stops (as does the camera) and then backs up (with the camera moving forward), before pumping another round into the shotgun in preparation for opening up the bathroom door. It's a quick little shot but, for some reason, it always stuck with me.

I think it's time you watch Lolita

don't you think it would break them completely 😂 the book is really great too 😉

Ninaofthe90s

I totally would. It's far better than the two movies versions I have seen, although I like them too. The book is great but also disturbing as hell of course.

I enjoyed the movie at first but hearing that the director's ex-wife said it was inspired by her whom he met when she was 11 but dated her when she was 15 and he was 31. A year later they would get married and she had his child; also there was a sex scene that was cut in the script. I can't really watch this film in the same way again despite how well-directed and written it is, the pedophilic undertones make me too uncomfortable

wtf 😳 — I hadn’t seen this since forever, was like cool, rem it being good...but this, almost had to stop. Covered my eyes; deeply unsettling. I am not a sensitive person, but as an adult, this is a different film. All the positives got tainted. Now I feel sick about it after reading Natalie Portman’s experience. Google her interviews. Sick
