Episode 8 of War of the Damned, Separate Paths. This was a heavy episode back when I watched it and it still hits hard years later. So much emotional turmoil, love, loss & sacrifice. Both the Rebels & Romans are all in their feels this episode. Spartacus & Crassus forced to make choices that will forever change them and the lives of those closest to them. They don't shy away from showing how draining it is to be in this war, Spartacus and his army must fight or die while Crassus must defeat Spartacus or be seen as a failure in the eyes of the Senate.

Crassus can't lose, he's put so much time, effort, blood & a sea of gold into being the man that will finally stop the Rebel King. Succeed where Glaber, Varinius, Scrofa, Cossinius & Furius failed. He sowed dissension in their ranks, turned the Cilicians to his cause, retook Sinuessa and trapped the rebels on Melia Ridge. Spartacus outplaying him is a mistake that he has to correct very quickly. Marching his legions to exhaustion and when Metellus returns to rebuke him for failing to kill Spartacus he lets him know that no matter what cost he will defeat Spartacus.

Metellus is unconvinced and makes a grave error when he says Crassus' own body slave deserted him so how I can trust anything you say now. He beats the senator bloody for his impertinence and threatens to kill him if doesn't go back to Rome and tell them that he is still in control of the situation and Spartacus will be put to grass soon. Once again the series shows that Spartacus can bring even men of reason and restraint to desperation and force them down dark paths to rid themselves of this accursed Thracian. Crassus, his son even Caesar are not immune to this as they have suffered as a result of Spartacus or his actions. Crassus is seen as a upjumped plebeian who the senate tolerates because he is filthy, stinking rich. So many pompous Patricians would love to see him fall to ruin which Tiberius certainly won't let happen. He's back in his father's good graces but it all threatens to fall apart when Caesar confronts him about his rape of Kore and him being the reason she fled to the rebels, causing Crassus to be distracted, letting Spartacus slip from grasp and imperiling his standing in the Senate.

Caesar would be all too happy to see the smug little shit get his just desserts. Unfortunately he does underestimate him, Tiberius does possess the same cunning as Crassus, though on a much smaller scale. He turns the tables on him and shatters a amphora of wine across his face before his goons beat him down and restrain him. Allowing Tiberius to do something really left of field, rape Caesar. It's very shocking but not at all surprising from a vile individual like him. He essentially blackmails him to keep his mouth shut or he will tell everyone that the noble Gaius Julius Caesar got taken like a Dacian Catamite, essentially being fucked like a whore.

This is actually something rumored to have happened to Caesar, though it was a foreign king, Nicomedes of Bithynia not a fellow roman. Either way if it was proven it would ruined his reputation and standing amongst his peers. Roman men can have sex with whomever they want, women, men even children so long as they are the dominant one. It's shameful for a man to be raped or even be the bottom in a relationship, Roman men can never show weakness or be submissive.

To add insult to injury he's forced to lead the infantry charge and having to keep his shame secret when Crassus inquires about him. He nearly is killed by Crixus but is saved by Tiberius of all people, having stolen the glory of besting the Undefeated Gaul from him. Speaking of Crixus, this is was the last battle for our beloved Gaul who meets his end at the conclusion of the episode. He got a splendid sendoff though, a awesome performance from Manu Bennett. He and Naevia are the main characters to be in all four Spartacus programs. He had a rich and complex backstory, character development and was so damn likeable. Manu Bennett brought depth, pathos, vulnerability and charisma to the role, Crixus is the guy and very much Spartacus' equal and proof that even bitter enemies can become brothers of unshakeable bond.

It took someone to stab Crixus in the back for him to be taken out, it happened the roman way. Unfortunately, somewhat historically accurate that Spartacus and Crixus split. But the actual reasons are not known. It also wasn't clear whether or not Crixus and his 30k forces intended to attack Rome. It also wasn't Crassus who stopped them, but some other leader.

He goes from a gladiator focused only on glory in the arena, to a fierce, well respected leader who champions the cause of freedom. His love for Naevia is his driving force and it's very touching that they have weathered everything and are still together. Which makes it all the more heartbreaking when she is forced to see the love of her life struck down and beheaded before her very eyes. Crixus went out like a warrior, yes even if his death was undignified since Tiberius, that motherfucker speared him in the back then chopped his head off. He got to be leader of his own army, delivering multiple defeats to Rome before his rousing speech outside the very city. He makes short work of Arius and his legion before Crassus came and spoiled the fun. Kudos to Crixus for coming very close to bringing ruin to Rome.

We also lost a whole bunch of rebels this episode, the bald brute Brictius courtesy of Caesar. His girl Verenda, Batiatus' former slave Santos for the eagle eyed viewer and perhaps Agron. Which is also sad seeing as he had that touching goodbye with Nasir. He doesn't show vulnerability often but him wanting Nasir to be free and live knowing that means he sacrifices any chance of a life with him tugs at the heartstrings really well.

Anyway I've gone on enough, great to see you appreciate this episode's quality Jimmy. One of the best in the series overall like Shadow Games or Whore or Kill Them All. Even if you devastated at the events that transpired. Thanks for the reaction and looking forward to you seeing the last two, gratitude and peace my friend.

Jimmy I "hear you when you say you're jaded on titties" from the show! I'm not in agreement however! If you think about it we were blessed to witness Zena, Nyssa, and Anameus' wife who was a star on the series Blue Bloods in there full glory and that's not counting the many other fine a$$ ladies we were able to witness (all b4 they became the stars we know them as, except for Zena of course)!! Just sit back, be thankful and enjoy the beautiful scenery!!!!

Caesar being raped wasn’t rumored, he went to meet Nicomedes to secure his fleet for Rome and allegedly had an affair with Nicomedes.

Dammit Crixus, now I'm gonna be sad all day
