That first general that committed suicide because it's in their warrior culture to "regain" their honor by admitting defeat and performing this act. The main char who beheaded him acted as his "second", this is only offered to enemies they respect. Obviously stabbing and gutting yourself hurts like hell, so the second is there to kill you instantly so that you don't dishonor your brave act by crying or begging while dying.

Totally agree on the romance, its the worst part of this movie. It would be so much better if they didnt try to force a shitty romance sublot in.

Tom Cruise is a shining example of how good looking, talented, charming people can do pretty much whatever they want and those who aren't involved with those bad things will still like them. I also forgot that Zwick made this one. Some good moments here
