first thing, the Caesar thing was shaving. It was just a weird angle they decided to shoot that scene. Also the show did a good job to portray the roman wife's husband as someone who might have opened the gate. There was enough scenes for either argument, but you are correct, the only 100% option was the spear to the face.

Episode 2 of War of the Damned, Wolves at the Gate. Fine follow up to the premiere. As this is the last season, there's no time to lose as we go straight into Spartacus' plan to seize a city from Roman control. Sinuessa en Valle, Diotimos' home is chosen as the new base for the rebellion.

Spartacus, Crixus & Gannicus infilitrate the city and find many dangers, slaves being stoned, hostile romans like the slaver Laurus and that all the weapons in the city are stored under lock and key with a formidable gate barring entry. Luckily Gannicus has history with a blacksmith, Attius who after being paid well forges two swords for the two champions. Unfortunately for him, that's not all they need as they essentially strongarm him into helping them opening the city gate otherwise, if they are caught with his swords, his life is equally forfeit.

So against his better judgement he manages to lock the guards in the armory while Spartacus & Gannicus fight the remaining ones and see the gate open. I read in a review back in when this episode aired, that because these two make such a superb fighting duo, if they were in the WWE, they would hold the Tag Team belts for 50 years. There just that good. The Bringer of Rain & the God of the Arena waste the roman rentacops and raise the gate for the rebel army to enter. Which leads to a orgy of blood, guts, with slashing of the metal swords and general killing and rampaging. Diotimos frees his fellow slaves at the cost of his life, backstabbed by Laurus who is quickly dispatched in turn by Gannicus. We also see the downside of the rebellion as many innocent men, women and children are slaughtered including the little girl and mother who Spartacus met earlier.

This all leads to a standoff with the rebels and the Aedile Ennius with two guards lock themselves inside the grain stores threatening to burn the city down if need be. Spartacus has his wife, the kind noblewoman Laeta, who he had two friendly encounters with appeal to him to open the gate. She pleads with him to put aside his pride and save the remaining citizens by opening the gate. It's all for naught as Spartacus seizes the opportunity to get the drop on his guards and thrust a spear through the Aedile's face. He couldn't take the risk of this all going wrong. Though it's clear that he is perturbed by the excesses of his army.

Back in Rome, things are decidedly less grim as Crassus makes plans to move his legions from Rome to battle. This episode also introduces young Gaius Julius Caesar, yes that Caesar. There's no record of Caesar every fighting in the Third Servile war but if you have Caesar, of course your going to show him. Todd Lasance's performance is great, very different to the stoic general and statesman he'll become yet still a rambunctious, vulgar grunt with a hallowed name. We see Crassus & Caesar come together with Caesar's vaunted name and military experience and Crassus' outrageous wealth they will be able to defeat Spartacus and rise to soaring heights as result.

Though this won't be easy as Caesar does gain Crassus' ire by trying to fuck Kore, his wife Tertulla looking to travel with her husband on campaign. Also we see Tiberius and Caesar already going at it as they vie for the right hand position of Crassus. While Crassus shows a more vulnerable side with Kore as he would have her join him on campaign but only is she desires it, man to woman. She does and clearly more as she calls him by his first name as they embrace. We also see that Crassus decides to honour Tiberius by making him his Word & Will. This naturally angers Caesar though it's quelled by Crassus promise to make him Military Tribune and that he has a far greater plan instore for the hot headed patrician. The episode ends with Crassus moving his massive army forward to crush the rebellion and bring about the end of Spartacus.

This season the stakes are the highest they've ever been as the showdown between Spartacus & Crassus draws ever closer. Thanks Jimmy and looking forward to the next one, peace.

I like the Caesar character here, even if he technically shouldn't be, but the decision to give him blonde hair is questionable. It completely throws me out of immersion to think Julius Caesar had blonde hair.
