this is awesome. Although I wish you wouldn't have stopped the movie the moment the credits started. The song "Now we are free" by Lisa Gerrard and Hans Zimmer is one of my favorite songs ever and one of the best work Hans Zimmer has ever done. It's Worth a listen - it just works wonderful with this movie ❤❤

Joaquin Phoenix is the greatest american actor we have in my opinion. He has this extreme intensity and melancholy in his acting which is unparalleled. He's such an highly emotional actor. He was only 24 years old when he made this movie! Weirdly enough Russell Crowe won the oscar for best actor for this movie, but Joaquin did not win for supporting actor. It would take another 20 years for him to win (for Joker) 😂 The movie won for best actor, best picture, costume, sound and visual effects. My favorite parts of this movie did not win (Joaquin Phoenix and Hans Zimmer's music)

Russell Crowe, as Maximus, was just pure badassery and charisma from beginning to end. Maximus is certainly one of my favorite characters of all time. Another great actor and performance. He certainly deserved his oscar win for best actor. Right afterwards he filmed "A beautiful mind" - my favorite performance of his. Which couldn't be more different than this role. It just proves how diverse of an actor he is. Always fascinated me, that those two roles were played by the same actor almost in the same year.

I agree with your friend here. I love the beginning of the movie. Starts off with a huge battle right away. Maximus being badass...and they show how loved and respected he is amongst his men. epic music as well. Very unusual beginning. Absolutely fantastic.

One of the inspirations for Jack Gleeson's King Joffrey(incest-baby) portrayal from GoT was Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus. You can kind of see they have a similar glare and mannerisms.

Been looking forward to this one! This movie always juggles the number one favorite movie spot for me along side Forrest Gump. I used to watch this film every day after school when I was a kid ( I know I know this is NOT a kids film) lmao but my mom loved it so much she allowed it 🤣 fantastic soundtrack, amazing performances, and It never fails to make me she'd a tear at the end EVERY time. Fantastic movie indeed Jimmy 👌

The actor Oliver Reed who played Proximo died during the shooting of the movie. Since he hadn't finished all of his scenes they had to create a digitial body double for the rest of it. They also had to change the script and kill Proximo, because in the original script the character survived.

I love this movie, it's a classic and still hits just as hard. About the sudden turn around of Quintus. The primary thing the extended edition adds is a sub plot with Quintus where he slowly becomes more and more disillusioned about the emperor. In the theatrical cut it comes out of nowhere but in the extended it is actually set up.
