It is obviously a shame what happened with Andy Whitfield, but you have to give the show runners credit for putting together a prequel season on the fly and to get all the characters they had already killed off back to the show.

I love your comment at the start about Gannicus looking like a douche. My thoughts exactly and then by the end, I was cheering him on as he fought blindfolded. He is definitely a douche, but an entertaining one. And yep, happy Batiatus, cool relationship between Solonius and him, how does this all go so horribly wrong? It'll be a pretty good damn journey. There isn't a filler episode amongst this season!

We begin Gods of the Arena Jimmy, a very solid prequel to the Spartacus series. Batiatus and Lucretia before they became the power couple climbing the rungs of position in Capua. He is ambitious but not ruthless as he will become, which is why he mistook Tullius' nature entirely. You don't become a powerful businessman with the ear of the Magistrate who can casually ask for you to sell your best gladiator to him without being a stone cold gangster.

Gangsters don't take no for an answer which leaves Batiatus beaten bloody and pissed on for his troubles. We also see the origins of some of our favourite characters like Crixus, yet a savage Gaul who manoevures himself into the House of Batiatius. He begins training with a younger Ashur, still full of zeal and ambition before his falling out with Crixus. A happy Oenomaus, married and still seeking to regain his spot after his fight with Theockles. Naevia, a naive handmaiden not yet bound to Lucretia and Solonius, the supportive and trusted friend of Batiatus.

It's nice to see before they became bitter enemies, the two were close once and generally cared about each other. We also get new characters like Gaia, the free spirited BFF of Lucretia who no doubt influenced Lucretia to become the woman we all now and love. Melitta, Oenomaus' kind and clever wife, Vettius, the weaselly Lanista and smug protege of Tullius, big boy Dagan and of course the then Champion of Capua, the Mighty Gannicus.

Dustin Clare's performance as the swaggering, womanizing, hard fighting Celt is great. He has charisma in spades and a very interesting arc in this prequel series. His handicap match against Otho is a very cool match, he is not as refined as Crixus or as methodical as Spartacus but he is great at improvising. Looking forward to the rest of the GOTA reactions Jimmy, thanks and peace.

I really like Batiatus and Solonius friendship. They seem to be good buds. Mutually Machiavellian for each others benefit. And it makes their relationship in Blood and Sand all the more interesting considering where it all ends.

the next episode really played with your expectations. Because of where it leads to we're always waiting for them to turn on each other, but then the show curves ball us and no, they are both still (friends) playing the game.
