It's interesting to look at a scene like Heart's first meeting with Alma, where we the audience and Ellsworth can see through his faux-folksy civil bullshit, and then look back at his folksy/civil scenes with people end of season 2. There are flashes in his eyes, especially when Tolliver first plants the seeds of blackmail, that hes restraining some impulse. Also it kind of sheds new light onto why Wolcott seemed to almost look up to Hearst as a father, he wept when they severed connection, and then wrote Hearts a helpful letter before taking his own life. I think he saw his own dark impulses, better restrained, in Hearst. I just love how inventive EB is with his vile insults. "Flicking at insects with your sticky tongue..." He's somehow completely believable despite being cartoonish. I love 3rd episodes of Deadwood seasons, they bring wagons of new characters! Season 1 it was the Bella Union squad, season 2 it was Wolcott, and now we have Wu and Blazanov returning and Aunt Lou and Langrishe's Troupe. That's Brian Cox, aka Stryker from X2 and other X-Men films, Super Troopers, HBO's Succession, Braveheart, like a dozen other things. Also, as rough as Deadwood is, that cute little cul-de-sac of homes with the central park seems a nice place to live, especially when you look back at the state of the camp in 1x1.
