"YOou don't understand!" Trust me, Jimmy, re: Al I do! As I've said a million times this is my favorite show. I'm deeply into it. And I wanted you to watch it for a bunch of reasons but I knew if you only liked one thing about it, it'd be Al. Al was kind of sidelined early on in season 2 with his health problems, which aside from the drama of his recovery allowed Bullock to be center stage with his romantic triangle as well as let Tolliver and Wolcott act unimpeded. Both Seth and Martha definitely become more subdued in the immediate mourning period of young William which also lets Al come back to the forefront so we can see his machinations come to the fore. It's a pretty happy ending, almost like season 1 with Al having his win over the magistrate, getting Bullock to be sheriff, and looking down on the Doc and Jewel dancing as trixie smiles up at him. And yeah, Wolcott got off easy. He's a show invention so they definitely decided to give us the less satisfying conclusion by leaving his exit in his own hands. Justice is hard to find in Deadwood, still. I especially like the way the show puts Moes Manuel, a vulgar man who killed his brother for money and got shot when he was in a drunken rage, against poor William who had his injury at the same time. Letting Moes live, though understandably more subdued, while killing William is just another way the wild west of the show is unfair and merciless. Our hero and most important civic figure is a killer and a thief, our sheriff is an adulterous maniac, our finest citizen is a former laudanum addict in a loveless marriage, and our local serial killer escaped justice and got off lighter than a pair of young sibling thieves. It's definitely frustrating, especially since even Walcott's motives are never really clear...just this murky madness he can't quite express. Still, was nice to see the actor back, even as such a shit!
