I really love how the show parallels Cy with Joanie and Eddie vs Al with Trixie and Dan. Both Al and Cy are brutal, ruthless men but I think the fundamental difference between them is encapsulated in the speech Al gives to Trixie at the top of the ep. Al speaks about being willing to grit your teeth and do something you don't want or find unpleasant to accomplish a greater goal. Al is stubborn and arrogant, sure, but he is able to hear someone else's opinion and compromise or change his stance if it's a well reasoned argument. He's even willing to back down in the right circumstances as long as you don't test him too much. The way he buried his grudge with Seth, eased up some on Trixie, and the way he let go of the gold claim to Mrs. Garrett all prove that. Cy can't do that. He always has to have his way and he becomes explosively violent when you openly disagree with him. Ultimately I think it's a matter of insecurity. Al always knows who he is and where he stands. He is completely secure in his own power and his own ability to make the best of any situation. Cy seems deeply, deeply insecure. He's afraid of losing Joanie and Eddie so he squeezes hard on them. He's afraid people will think he's weak so he goes even further in his brutality than is needed. I think he was particularly unhinged and drinking heavily in this episode because the meeting when Eddie spoke up on behalf of Joanie showed Cy that he's losing his control over them both. So he had to reassert that in the bar in public to feel better.

I'm with you on the reverend being annoying, but I absolutely adore Jane - especially Robin Weigert's performance, but the character as well.

Not sure if you already knew this, but Jane is played by the same actress that was Juliette's sister in Lost.
