I agree, the second half of this season lacks compared to other seasons, I think not having Shaw around is part of it, but It is nice to have Carter back for this one at least.

I absolutely love how it cuts back between Reese and Carter as Reese follows in her footsteps during the investigation. And those last few minutes between them get me every time. Damn. I also really like the little hints at what is really going on in that car with Carter: - Reese feeling cold and constantly turning up the heat. - Carter saying "I've seen a lot of dead bodies. You know what they all had in common? Not one of them looked like they saw it coming." at the beginning of the episode. - Later in the episode, Reese and Carter are talking in the car, and most of it is color graded warmly as it is when they are doing that stakeout, but there is one shot in that scene on Carter - only one - that is color graded blue, as in where he is stranded out in the cold. In that shot, Reese asks, "Tell me something. How'd you end up here in the first place?" and Carter says "I'm pretty sure you drove us here." It's like in that brief moment, Reese has some lucidity on what is really happening. I never noticed that until now.

I really like this episode as it’s a nice step back before the final two which I love. Seeing carter back and realizing John never actually told her what he thought he did. Carter is still intregal to John

This episode is just beautifully written and played. While it isn't written by Jonathan Nolan, it certainly plays with our sense of time and structure the way so many scripts he's written for his brother do.

What's incredible is that the very first sounds we hear in this episode is Reese getting shot. Then we fade in to a flashback/hallucination. All other scene transitions in the show are via the Machine or Samaritan, but this episode is purely John's POV. He wanted to be close to Carter (alone) and he was. For a brief time, nobody was watching or listening. Just a man dying with his regrets. I think this makes it the most human episode.

Reese has kind of taken a back seat since the multiple AIs storyline began, but he gets his moment to shine here. And so good to see Taraji as Carter again. Jim Caviezel was wonderful too. Apart from the obvious technical brilliance of this episode, I also like that it fixes (to an extent) one of the issues I had with the Reese-Carter relationship turn in the episode in which Carter died, without feeling like a retcon. I hate that scene in which Reese says Carter saved him (sob, poor Harold) and gave him reason to live. This episode tells us Reese imagined some of his heart-to-hearts with Carter and projected on to her things and moments that did not happen IRL. I agree about the lack of direction in the second half of season 4. That was quite disappointing, knowing the heights and relentlessly energetic storytelling the show is capable of. The first half of the season is amazing, the second half kind of disappointing. This episode is also probably better placed at 17 or 18 in the season, not 20, just before the endgame.

Also, Carter mentions something about Reese's feeding lines to his "cop shrink" earlier in their conversation. All the little hints the conversation is actually taking place in the present are brilliant

It may be extremely depressing, but this is maybe my favorite episode of the series. Agree with other commentators/recappers that it felt like a Christopher Nolan film.

I loved Carter so much. The moment I saw her in this episode I just burst into tears 😥😥 And Jim Caviezel was amazing this episode.

Carter found that picture with Jessica and Reese when she was visiting Jessica's parents after her murder in season 1. Because they said that she was dating "some guy". She took the picture with her. Then later she destroyed all of John's files except the photo 💖💖

I thiml it serves well in the timeline. It allowed Root to be there for Finch. It shows us the mortality of the characters and that they are willing to kill off major ones right before we get into the thick of things.
