The guy you didn't recognize is caleb phipps from the episode "Pi" of season two. When reese was locked up, Finch became his teacher. He wanted to throw himself in front of a train because his brother died that way and he blames himself for it. Even though he's a genius who wrote a computer code (someone fill in the blanks here please) and finch gave him the first numbers of Pi and told him his phone number was in there somewhere 😁

These 5 or 6 episodes after the Saw is captured arc are not great, and they kind of bring down what started off as a great season, it's the main reason I put season 3 over season 4 but it does pick up near the end. Also the guy Root meets with is the kid from season 2 episode 11, 2 Pi R.

He wrote a really powerful compression algorithm that is mentioned in passing this episode. His teacher says it could compress the entire library of congress into (memory stick? something small...) Root says earlier in the episode she is recruiting people to fight Samaritan so it's implied Caleb and his algorithm will be useful in some way. Nice counterpoint to how Greer keeps on collaborating/acquiring tech companies

I had erased this episode from memory. A reminder of the kind of junk that slips into a CBS show with 20+ episodes a season. This is probably in my bottom 3 episodes of the show. Caleb's showing is a nice touch though. Loved the relationship he had with Finch in '2piR'.

On first viewing you don't know it but this episode actually sets up a few things for the end of season 4, as well as future events. One of the reasons I like this show is that even with "filler" episodes the writers use them to their advantage. This is one of the few shows that, for me, really has no filler episodes. Some episodes aren't that great, but I think each one helps to advance the storyline of either the overarching mythology or a character's development or introduces a plot point. It's one of the reasons I can rewatch this show over and over again.

Absolutely, Caleb is very important
