Michael

Hats off to Denise Thé, who has written some great episodes of this show, including this one!

CJ

Great Reaction Jimmy, NO SPOILERS ANYONE!!

You really do need to talk about it in terms of before the last two minutes. It’s brilliant television.

This is one of the best episodes in TV history. For me, and many others, this is up there with any episodes of GOT or Breaking Bad. It has a 9.9 on IMDB which so few episodes of TV shows can claim. The line that Finch delivered it is one of my favourites of all time ''Whoever looks at the world as if it were a game of chess deserves to lose'', its just so amazing. The whole machine development was amazing, you didn't mention so I am not sure if you realised but the machine went through about 800,000 possible scenarious before selecting the best one, which had only 2 percent damn. This ep was out of this world for me. I know you are upset we lost Shaw, but the way she went was badass and she sacrificed herself to protect the others. TBH I would not have traded Shaw for anyone myself, since I am a big fan of Finch and I didn't want on missing on the friendships he had with Reese and Root, as well as Lionel being the odd man out, I didn't want him to go before (if ever) finding out about the machine. Anyways excellent reaction as always Jimmy. Looking forward to next one.

Does the perfect episode exist? Hell yeah. PoI has some doozies, but If-Then-Else is something else, striking the perfect balance of hard sci-fi and grounded human philosophy. It might just be my favourite 44 minutes of television ever. "[!] No Valid Options" -- Crushing to see horror and hopelessness through the eyes of a machine. Also, what would this show be without Michael Emerson being able to make him speaking to the air or a computer be compelling TV? Chess is a bad metaphor for war, and for life. Reason #1001 to love this show.

No spoilers. Of anything. Let her death be her death. You can discuss that or anything not related to the story up to this point after the show finishes.

Last reaction you said you watched some season 1 episodes and Shaw does add a lot to the show. I was like oh crap, here we go...

Wish they had subbed Iris for Shaw. Sorry not sorry.

I remember watching it the first time around and being so curious if The Machine would prioritize its favourites. I mean, everyone mattered, but The Machine did have a special place for its Admin after attempting to kill him a few times in its infancy. And it shut down the simulation in which he died real quick, but kept going even after John died in his simulation. But no, she was so pure 😢

I, like so many others, found this episode to be a true highlight of story telling. It made concrete the concept of the machine's thinking and how horrible such a thing is to be able to see in such detail the potential losses at hand. The use of the generic language to simplify the scenarios was great humor and excellent writing. Your reaction, how much the loss of Shaw meant, especially with your comment about her at the start of the episode is one of the major reasons that I think you're the best reactor out there.

Shaw has been sidelined since the beginning of the season (at desk job in mall, just a driver for the gang, now shot up) because the actress was pregnant. Unfortunate, but also awesome because we got to see how human the Machine is: it kept on scanning for alt options even though it was obvious there wasn't anything it could do. Up to now, the machine has been plot device and framing device but I think this is the episode that cements its humanity. It doesn't treat people as pieces like Greer and Samaritan, but as allies and friends.

You looked so affronted by the end of the first run through, before we found out it was a simulation. Harold dying just wasn't something you were prepared for. I think it's interesting that this is, for me, one of the funniest episodes of PoI, if only for all the ways Lionel can call Root crazy, and yet there's that but punch ending. I also love that Shaw talked Gary down and the kiss!

Person of Interest gloriously making fun of itself being a CBS show: "Coolly delivered sadistic warning" -- handsome hero makes corny opening threat. "Self-deprecating enquiry into time necessary for infiltration" -- question from his clueless sidekick "Funny yet insightful retort" -- hot girl gets in her quip "Mildly agitated declaration of mission completion" -- the hacker IS IN!

David

I was upset too.

Quite frankly, I can only think of one other episode I like better. The music pushed it over the top for me. This ep is a banger.

Ninaofthe90s

One of the greatest episodes ever. EVER. Perfection. I think we were all waiting for this one. 9,9 on imdb - I'm usually not too interested in that, but this time they got it right 😍😀

Easily one of my favorites of the series and all of television. Such a great episode. Tough ending but there is hope

Inseriousity

Love this episode so much as we see the inner workings of the Machine in more detail. It's so creative and the flashbacks of Finch teaching chess tie it all together nicely. I particularly like Finch's lesson about chess at the end and you can see how the Machine has its moral compass because of these lessons. Serious aside, Fusco kisses Root because "why not, it's just a simulation" lol even when her assets are close to destruction, still time for jokes.

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

As I know you’ve seen it all I can now say I love the parallels between this episode and the last ever few. Root gets shot - perfect end for her. Reese gets blown up - what a perfect end for him

Only after I found out that Sarah Shahi was pregnant did I notice on a rewatch that it was fairly obvious. Thus the reason for her death. Most shots focus on her face during this episode and she has been lacking in other episodes. Here are a few clear shots of a massive coat trying to do its best. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BrxWDfGsxXI9m5mjLoNz-F9Eo6a5EkoI/view?usp=drivesdk
