I find Ging extremely entertaining, but he's definitely piece of shit and it's not an argument lol. The more I watch this arc, the more I feel like the relationship between Ging and Pariston almost kind of mirrors the relationship of Gon and Hisoka. Hisoka and Gon have a larger gap in experience and honed skill, but both pairs seem to be very compatible in terms of raw potential and natural talent, with Ging/Gon being very focused on their own goals but very interested in the world around them, including a strange competitive interest in Hisoka/Pariston, who just want to "play" with Ging/Gon. Obviously very much a generalization and all those characters have a lot more to them, but I still feel like it's notable.

I need more of that Pariston and Ging relationship in other shows. When Pariston said "I trust Ging as an enemy." I felt that.

I personally am not mad at the piece of shit when it comes to him abandoning Gon. He was somewhat responsible irresponsible, but then again just looking at it in that sense, he knew he is irresponsible and not suitable to raise a child. I actually think him letting an amazing household to raise him up was a good choice. His life was completely normal and happy until he discovered that Ging wasn’t dead. Gon’s obsession of finding Ging is actually kind of irrational IMO, and was what ultimately makes this all seem depressing. I also don’t understand why he’s so obsessed with his dad, yet give no shit about his mom. Yeah, I know the show explained it, but it was still dumb. Gon’s obsession with Ging, a person he’s honestly never even met before only comes from the fact that Ging is his dad. Outside of that, this is literally just a stranger. The only differences between Gon’s dad and Gon’s mum to Gon should be no nothing other than their sex and their label as “mum” and “dad”. Like, I get it, his Aunt was like a “mum”, so he doesn’t care about his “real mum”, which seems like a sweet scene but it feels fucked up considering how obsessed he is with his dad just because he is his biological “dad” despite being a complete stranger. HOWEVER, I do find Ging a piece of shit for intentionally hiding from Gon despite knowing how desperate Gon is to meet him. And with his seemingly nigh-omniscient foresight, this is truly shitty for him to do. I’m not defending him honestly, as I probably find him as a shitty person just as much as you. I think I just personally find him a piece of shit in a different way, as I don’t find him to be a shitty dad for leaving Gon to the family to take care of and even hiding his existence as I think that’s ultimately a good decision, but I do find him a bad dad when it comes to hiding from Gon despite kind of caring about Gon. Ultimately though, until he finally met and talk to Gon I wouldn’t even consider him an actual ”dad”, other than from the biological point of view. I just find him to be a shitty and selfish individual (not maliciously) much like Gon.

This is a late reply, but I think I can explain Gon's motivation a bit. Ging is very selfish and this trait makes him not that good of a parent. SPOLIER FOR CHAPTER 345: Gon himself says that it's not that he wanted to see him and that after seeing him especially he realized his goal was just to find him. He says that it was fun meeting him and that it made him happy, but that he felt like it was more like meeting an awesome uncle you've always heard about and not a father.
