Remember that Meruem is only about a month old at this point, I think this is his equivalent to that point in ur teens where ya start to figure out what your gonna be all about as an adult. The chimera ants are part beast and part human, some choose to be feral like Leon and those grunts Gon, Killua and Kite murdered in NGL and others like Ikalgo, Colt or Meleoron choose a more human way of living. Meruem has been an ant up till now and Komugi is bringing out the humanity in him, which is why the royal guard want to kill her if that looks to be the case. Man I love this arc.

One of my favorite episodes. Not as flashy as some of the others, but that emotional whiplash from seeing the King try to work out his feelings, going back and forth, is really special.
