Gon is actually older than 12 here they made a mistake. He was already 12 when he took the hunter exam, so he would have been 13 when Killua passed the exam next year, and since then a couple of months have passed, so he is either 13 soon to be 14 or recently turned 14 at the time of this episode.

Mistake in the sub or does the narrator say 12 to? Math checks out though. Close to 14.

Both Gon and Killua turned 13 soon after this Arc started and it's only been a few months since. At least that's what the timeline in the wiki says. They met Kite as 12 year olds (almost 13).
