And that is #6 (lol) in the TV pantheon of divisive finales, along with the likes of Lost, Dexter, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, and How I Met Your Mother. First things first, Starbuck is probably an angel like Head Six or Head Baltar, there's a great cut Tyrol flashback where Cally warns Tyrol that messing with Boomer is stupid and that there are other people looking out for him that plays while he's sitting next to Tory's corpse, and yes most of the ending was essentially made on the fly except for the Earth reveal and the Six in present day New York.

Also Starbuck as the harbinger of death refers more to what she was metaphysically than what she would bring. The actual foreshadowing for her role was that she would lead them all to their end. It's a little too cute coming from the writers but considering all the recent dialogue about GOT relating to foreshadowing vs character development, its aged a little better as a character mechanic.

Final notes are that Cavils death was improvised by his actor, Tigh was originally going to kill him in the impromptu battle; and that the writers strike changed the original plans about the last 10 or so episodes. Ellen was originally going to be on Cavil's side and Galactica was going to crash land on our Earth after the jump.

I don't think you can really call Dexter, Game of Thrones and How I Met Your Mother finales divisive. Those finales were really disliked (or even hated) by most, especially compared to other finales mentioned. How I Met Your Mother finale is rated 5.6 on IMDB, Dexter is at 4.7 and GoT at 4.3. That's not really divisive. Can't really compare those to 8.2 for Lost, 9.0 for BG and 9.1 for Sopranos. Massive difference.

Lol I remember the internet when the finales for BSG, Lost, and Sopranos came out. Those finales pissed people off like crazy. I will say that those finales have probably aged better in the cultural landscape than Dexter and HIMYM. Game of Thrones we're still close to it to tell, but its problems aren't the same as Dexter or HIMYM. Also lol at people rating GOTs ending as worse than Dexter's, that's just dumb.

“If there's one thing that we should have learned it's that You know, our brains have always outraced our hearts. Our science charges ahead, our souls lag behind.” Literally one of my favorite lines ever written, from anything I’ve ever seen.

Re-watching this with you I was able to see so much more. I always hated the end scene, considering it preachy. It is preachy and pedestrian. How many movies or tv shows about "technology will be our end" do we have to go through? I love the characters, I love the betrayals and principled stands, I love the awkward "loving a machine" concept, but this crap about technology being our undoing is a trope that needs to go to the bin heap just as Luddite thoughts are considered. No, technology won't kill us. No, it won't tek er jyabs. No, it isn't the bogey man. Fear mongers need to stop listening to their lizard brain of fear and wake the fuck up to reality, technology makes everyone's life easier and happier.

I love the super long uncut bluray crisp version of this finale A LOT. This version is pretty good too.

I put BSG and Lost in the same boat. Both require dangerous amounts of suspension of disbelief, but they kinda earned that privilege on the backs of the crazy story they've been telling up till now. And if you squint just right to obscure some of the finer details it can emerge as something beautiful.

It's been such a pleasure re-watching this with you (my first rewatch of BSG!), Jimmy; am eager to hear your take on the show. Also just wanted to say that James Callis is such an amazing actor-- can play humor and poignancy with equal power. I love how you can see everything he's thinking/struggling with play across his face. And he was used in much the same way that Tyrion was used in the GOT finale-- that Pivotal Speech.

I gotta say, I am someone who thinks technology is always the way forward and that fear-mongering about it is a bad thing. But I can't say I ever got that from the finale, like you did. First off, they do that little 'it doesn't like to be called that', which is a cute reference to the hypothesis that we may very well be living in a simulation already, for which there are many compelling arguments. Secondly, I don't think the point of that final scene was to say 'We shouldn't build AI's and robots or they may destroy us' so much as 'Hey, if we do build an actual artificial intelligence some day in the future, maybe lets not dismiss the possibility that it may be just as capable of true consciousness as we are, so lets not make the mistake of treating it as if it doesn't'.

I do find it interesting how, when and under what circumstances the scripts were constructed under but in the end all I care about is did it work and was it believable. Coming from my perspective, it does and I give the writing a ton of respect because to organize everything with the elements that they had cooking in the fire was just genius or maybe they just got really, really lucky. Either way we ended up with a fantastic end that was in some respects sad and depressing but in other ways mainly hopeful with the possibility for a new start, a rebirthing of two races plus the newly discovered cousin's into what would one day be a single race. I really love this bit of the story, of them coming to a second Earth and finding another human race with which to teach and grow old with. It fits well into the mythologies of the world, the ancient writing of The Greeks, Egyptians and Roman God's, the stories of Atlantis, Mu and Avalon. I was very pleased to find that somehow Battlestar Galactica had found it's way into the category of myths and legends and not into the lameness of it's originator in finding Earth. As to the slight against technology, I myself don't believe that it is or rather that I don't take it that way. I see it more as a slight against our governing of technologies and not against our creation if it. "This has all happened before and it will all happen again" theme that ran through the show I think speaks to that Idea of how do we change the inevitable from what we have created? How do we as individual minds come together for the better of humanity and say no to greed and corruption? It's very interesting because we see in world history a weird magnetic pull to make the same mistakes over and over leading to the same results of war and death. I think it is a hope for most people that technology will one day give us the control to augment the critical mistakes of the past and make new positive opportunities for the future but then again "control" is a very scary word and we are very fallible individuals. Maybe God will have to save us, who knows.....but that is what makes life so interesting and I supposed one day some of us will find out and have a big laugh. I really enjoyed your reactions Jimmy, there for a minuet I thought your head was gonna explode with anticipation and when Kara disappeared your face was just classic. I'm sure my face was just as "WTF" as yours at that moment but I think when you re-watch this someday you may get more out of it, there is a lot to unpack in this finale so don't get too frustrated with it. I remember days after I had seen this while working and all of the sudden thoughts would occur to me about the show leading me to differing perspectives. It was interesting for a show to have that affect on me, only 2 other shows have done that "Lost" and "Babylon 5". Again I enjoyed re-watching this with you and now on to hopefully double episodes of Persons of Interest.....Yippeeee!!!

How many times did D’Anna say this had all happened before and would all happen again? Such a great payoff. We are the Cylons are the ancient aliens are early man are the end of the human race that was nearly annihilated by the Cylons...a full circle that will presumably repeat, ad infinitum. Love how the Chief was gonna go settle in...maybe Scotland? Love how they came down into Africa. Loved everything about this finale, and it was SPLENDID 😉 rewatching it with you, Jimmy. Thank you for your humor, appreciation for the great Bill Adama, and your insight. ❤️❤️❤️

I'd love this comment more if it were separated into more paragraphs. Solid, but poorly phrased.
