Can't remember if the ending is left unresolved, but I think John's intent is pretty clear based on the location he was brought to. A somewhat remote place with plenty of lye to dispose of the body, leaving no evidence behind. Could have taken the scumbag anywhere to chat. He chose there. Dead as a doornail.

Spoiler!!! John doesn't want to kill anymore. Which is why he started working for finch - to get away from his old life. Why would you think that he throws all that away for this asshole ( even if he deserves it). He didn't even kill the guy who killed jessica. But There is a clue what he did with both of them. He dumps jessicas husband to some mexican prison. And we later find out that there are others he dumped there as well. So I think we got an answer. Reese killing him doesn't make sense to me.

At 1 a week, he will finish around Wed January 13, 2021 (assuming he doesn't miss any weeks). So, about 2 years from now. He won't get to the end of season 2 until the beginning of December 2019.
