I don't know anything about the author of the source material and how far in advanced he planned things, but considering the story was about at this point when the very first episode of this series aired, the show-runners themselves definitely knew this twist was coming. There have been some hints up until now about the identities of Reiner, Annie, and Berthold, but it has mostly been normal scenes that can interpreted differently with the knowledge we have now. Hey Jimmy, Isayama (the writer) had everything planned from the start. If you go back to episode 2 of season 1 you see Annie, Bert, and Reiner as kids among the people who are homeless. And every scene with Reiner and Bert after that, foreshadow the betrayal. You also see them all interacting with each other. Its all super obvious on a second time watch.

It was totally planned from the start. There were a number of little moments that were planted in the first season that hinted at it, the biggest of which being the thing with Reiner escaping from Annie, which totally didn't make sense otherwise. Also Reiner and the Armored-titan have very similar haircuts. The nonchalant way that the reveal is done is part of what makes it so great. Everyone has that moment of "wait, what the fuck did he just say" and it makes for great reactions.

As for how far advanced this was planned, pretty fucking far, the story dives deeper then you could possibly guess at this current point. Shit you didn't think there was any reason to pay attention to or didn't think there was a reason to remember will be relevant eventually and a mind fuck, guaranteed, I'd literally bet money on it. The writing of this show is pretty good compared to most even if it doesn't seem like it for the time being, everything ties together eventually.

Reiner and Bertoldt were planned to be the Armored and Colossal Titans from the beginning. That was always set in stone. As far as I know, the only thing not set in stone was Sasha's survival. She was supposed to die in Season 2 episode 2, but fans like her so much so the author kept her in the story.

With the English subbed and manga, a lot of people thought "mistranslation". With the English dubbed, a lot of people thought they misheard. LOL it's beautiful! We don't want to believe what we're seeing or hearing, but there it is! And the way it was so casually and nonchalantly revealed as well completely subverted the typical dramatic reveals in most shows. The flag snapping was also perfect in symbolizing Reiner snapping in that moment as well. I remember I had so many questions after this reveal. Just like you, I was frustrated AND hyped :)

When Eren said “You Fucking Traitor” Jimmy gave one of his best reactions he’s ever gave. It’s my second favorite one he has ever done right behind his gibberish he spoke in the Lost season 2 finale!

This reveal was always planned. The hints were there since episode 1x3. Even their character designs resemble their titans, same with Annie. Bertolt was specifically made to be the tallest character in the story and had a tall face.

Some of the hints include: When cadets ask about the Armored Titan to Eren in 1x3, the screen immediately shifts to Reiner listening from the next table for a second. Then in 1x7 Annie,Bertolt and Reiner are together and Annie asks Reiner what to do next about their attack on Trost. Then in 1x8 Reiner and Annie are eager to get information on this new titan thats helping them(Eren), then in 1x10 when Eren transforms to protect Mikasa and Armin from the cannons, Reiner, Bertolt and Annie immediately start moving because towards Eren and Jean is like "wait guys whats going on"

(Spoiler-free lengthy comment 😀) This was uploaded just before I had to board my flight sdfds. Anyway, finally it's here! The amount of long silences lol. Re: was it all planned? Yes, absolutely! Fun exercise: re-watch all of Reiner and Bertholdt’s scenes this season (“he used to be a warrior”), and their scenes with Annie last season (as far back as s1e4). Worth it. For ex. in ep17: Armin instructs Jean and Reiner to cover their faces, but Reiner purposefully lowers his hood just before going at the Female Titan. When Annie sees his face, she smiles knowingly before "capturing" him. I love this line last ep: Reiner says, “So she [Ymir] knew at least a little about the mysteries of our world. I had no idea.” It seems like he’s referring to Ymir, a titan, knowing about the human world, but in hindsight, it’s the reverse, isn’t it? Ymir, human, knowing about the titan world. Other blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment last ep: when Ymir jumps on the tower so others could climb on her, Bertholdt can be seen about to bite his hand, ready to transform in case Ymir attacks. Amazing. This reveal + transformation is 11/10. Tense atmosphere, music, animation, Reiner’s turmoil, Bertholdt’s panic. “We were just children. We didn’t know anything.” This is the moment I knew I would protect R + B + A no matter what. “…and as a warrior fulfill my duty to the bitter end.” This line and through the transformation = arguably the best scene in the entire series. Just excellent. My list! Annie, Erwin/Levi, Reiner/Bertholdt/Ymir.

I really wanted to comment in the early AoT reactions how Jimmy was ending one mystery show (LOST) and starting another. Jimmy watching LOST: “what is the smoke monster? what is the island? what is Jacob's agenda???” Jimmy watching AoT: “what's in the basement? who are the bad guys? what is their agenda???”

Yep, I also thought it was an error in translation. Like what the fuck, why did they mess it up. Then that all happened. By the way, check last episode when Ymir brings the tower down and she goes up to pick them all up. You can see that Bertholdt is about to bite his hand to transform, but stops because Ymir starts talking.

This twist was definitely planned from the beginning there are hints sprinkled throughout Seasons 1 &amp; 2, you just don't really notice them on first time viewing. For example in Episode 3 when all the cadets ask Eren what the Armored Titan looks like, it pans over to Reiner taking a sip from his mug. There's more obviously, but that would require writing an essay.
