As another comment said, the show is definitely a slow and deliberate build, but once you hit the halfway point things really start to shift, at least in my experience. And the first few episodes have a lot going on in them once you understand everything too. This one in particular really sets up Theo's character well, and personally I really love how the switches between the past and present are edited, often going from the hands of characters to make the transitions. This one also deals with some really heavy stuff for sure. The whole "Mr. Smiley" thing is awful, and like you I enjoy that it's set up to be something supernatural and ended up being a mundane horror instead (and all the more horrifying for it). As soon as she touched the couch in the basement I knew what it all meant, but it's a rough thing to think about.

It's interesting that you don't like the characters. For me, the characters are by far and away the best thing about Hill House. The drama elements are significantly stronger than the horror elements, which is my problem with the show. I'd prefer more of a balance. Totally with you on the jumping back and forth.

I know the worst thing you can say to someone that is "meh" on a show is "You just gotta get to X episode and it will get good." Well... You just gotta get to the Nell episode and it clicks lol.
