i never thought it was super weird for them to pick people we don't know as the god parents. i like that it shows us they have lives outside of what we see. i have two sets of god parents, and one of them our family is no longer in contact with and growing up who'd "get me" was different than the godparents were so idk lol also this show gets weird about specially pam and religion. it's like they're not consistent with it or forget previous written things. the episode when michael thinks they're cursed she and daryl find out they're both presbyterian and high five and say "same religion!" (not to be a stickler but that's a denomination not religion) then she has her grandmother who is super old fashioned and may be for religious reasons whom we encounter at the wedding. then jim and pam want to have their baby baptized but this episode feels like jim and pam are total strangers to the church and the priest even gets the name wrong and it feels like they just walked into a random church. idk i can't explain it lol this whole episode felt weird though even outside of the godparent thing

So the thing with Toby is that in a previous episode he said that he was going in the seminary but left for a girl and then they got divorced. So I think that's where some of his religious issues stem from.

Religion is one of the most inconsistent things there is anyways. I don't think any of this is weird at all. Most people that go to church have no idea why they go and don't practice any kind of faith outside of that one hour a week. This definitely happens with baptisms too. Some of the least truly religious people I've ever known still go through all the traditional motions because it's what everyone in their family does or whatever. Your thing about Presbyterianism doesn't make sense. It's just a form of the protestant church like Roman Catholic is a form of Catholicism and many other subsects of religion, there's no inconsistency there with the grandmother. I think you really just nailed it with 'it shows they have lives outside the office' and I don't think the show really needs to explain more than that.
