I think Nathan is refering to the difference between their level of maturity or something like that, if you see in real life a cop dating a highschooler, it would be really inaproppiate... But to be honest i think the show was kinda wrong in saying that Parish graduate highschool, then went to the military, served in the army and some how turn out to be a deputy with only 24 years.
