Events aren't being recorded correctly unless they end up as wriggly line on a paper roll.

Never heard of that make here in the UK. What a beautifully simple product though.

I've seen similar. The thrift store I worked at got a temperature logger that used a battery powered clock motor and a ink stylus(think thermostat with stylus) to log temperatures on paper disks once. I've also seen the same, just larger, on refrigerated tractor trailers, although those seem to have been replaced with digital loggers.
