Metalbestos made chimney pipes made of an inner and outer metal lining with asbestos between the metal layers. The asbestos layer was to provided thermal insulation between the two metal inner and outer tubes. Therefore most of the heat was conducted out the top of the chimney pipes to the atmosphere via the flue gasses and not to flammable building materials. My house built in 1959 uses these flue pipes
