There seems to be a glitch at about 2:50.

Dr Andy Hill

Like you Fran, I had no problem with how and why rockets work, I guess my physics background and understanding of Newton's laws of motion, allowed me to understand. I think this video clears up the illusion and will help de-mystify rockets for the less physics minded.

As a complete aside, how close to being fully funded is your zero-g trip now? By fully funded I mean how much of your savings have been replenished by the GoFundMe appeal?

Nicholas Wilson

I just get a message saying this video is private. :/

Got message vid is pvt. I am patron member, what up Fran?

Anonymous

Ditto on the private issue as patron. Might be a Patreon issue…

Anonymous

I also get only "This video is private".

Anonymous

All good. I can now watch!

frantone

YouTube corrupted the first upload, so I had to reupload it with a NEW LINK. Seems fixed now!

The Illusion of Patreon Videos... (jk)

Nope, I'm getting the "Video is Private" message too.

David Peaker

It's still broken for me Update- it's working now!

Anonymous

All good now Fran! Thanks

Lovely video Fran!!

I have not heard the pressure explanation before, usually this is explained by conservation of momentum. Momentum of exhaust has to be balanced by momentum of the rocket, as momentum is a vector.

David Peaker

That's a very good explanation, similar to but better than the one in my Daily Mirror Book of Space from 1970.

Great. Now I have to go out and buy some balloons so I can inflate 'em and let 'em loose untied and ponder their crazy trajectories 'because Franlab'. 👍👍👍

Nice one!! Now do bumblebees!!

BobC

This. Also explains nozzle shape for atmospheric vs. vacuum.

Maarten Daalder

Reminds me of the story about an editorial in the NYT that said that Goddards rockets can't possibly work in a vacuum. They only published a short retraction after Apollo 11 launched.

When the molecules pass the narrow part (throat) of the DeLaval Nozzle it goes sonic velocity therefore the air cannot transmit back beyond the throat.

An excellent explanation and great graphics!
