Ha, an expert theremin player also!

Patreon could start a video service perhaps. It would make you less dependant on 'the algorithm'. Have they ever talked about this?

Philip Stephens

As far as monetization on YouTube is concerned, the excessive number of ads already drove me to subscribing to Premium to get rid of them all. Ads were spoiling my enjoyment of the videos I was watching because YouTube doesn't know how to put ads in the middle of videos without interrupting them mid-sentence, even though they claim to have "smart" placement algorithms.

If YouTube Premium was half as expensive as it is, I might consider subscribing. Maybe. But it's SO EXPENSIVE compared to many other streaming services. If it were a third or a quarter of its price, I'd subscribe without even thinking about it. So I guess it's ad blockers and YouTube Vanced for me, and I'll support the creators I like here on Patreon.

I agree it’s more expensive than it should be. But I dumped cable TV service, and that pays for YouTube literally 10 times over.

Gotta love a Theremin! I wish YouTube/Google would put a bit more effort into their algorithms so that they didn't leave "hole" for some channels to fall through. I feel qualified to talk about this as both my PhD and my post PhD/Stroke work has been all about algorithmic optimization.. Yeah just keep on keepin' on Fran,, overall it seems to be working for you!

Unfortunately covid is far from over... Delta is ~50% more transmissible which makes a huge difference with exponential growth, and presumably percolating through not entirely vaccinated populations. Countries are opening up, and cases are going up. Only the rich countries are vaccinated. https://www.democracynow.org/2021/7/21/covid_19_delta_variant_ed_yong In his article, he says there is no research but all the doctors he talked too think delta is more deadly/harmful. (One might think "what if we let go earlier, we'd have the gentler variant", but it's rate of evolution isn't necessarily time but the amount of replications with a potential for mutation.. So it would likely be as bad that way, _plus_ hospitals would be totally overwhelmed) Sorry to be off topic but don't want to let it go by unnoticed if i can help it.

I had noticed the change, but didn't know what was going on. YT is such a mess. Now that I've found several really excellent channels in the sea of crap, YT keeps shoving more bilge my way instead of the stuff I know I'll like. Gee, thanks.

Seemed like a pretty inspired idea to me, although this is a bit of a one-off really kindah make me wonder what else youtubers could do if they had more money. (ok, i don't know what you're gonna do yet!) See videos like these sometimes, or youtubers asking what watchers want, but kindah miss much indication that youtubers talk to each other about it? Or in general. Maybe this communication happens and i am just aware of it. Anyway, it might not be "if there is an idea i'll ask about it", but maybe the idea might occur eventually by fairly regularly communicating.

Patreon is a corporation made for profit, so i don't think it's an enormous improvement... Like something like Nebula might be an idea, it's not foolproof, but nothing is. Also there is Standard, dunno if that's a bad sign or just a way to allow more people to make videos for Nebula while keeping some quality control... (Personally think i might try Nebula..)

I vaguely recall hearing some theremin bumpers on WPRB - Did you have anything to do with that? :)

Phil in the kitchen

Sorry Fran, but that 'thing' has to be 2nd-only to bagpipes in the 'most annoying musical instrument' list.
