The OSGang close out 2023 with one last AASS! Today we chat about eye-hurting string lights, sound design, and the Great British Bake-Off!

(Flashing lights warning: The main bit at the beginning of this AASS is red playing with the settings on her string lights. They change colors and flash in changing patterns. Skip to ~7:09 for when it stays on one color)

Love the light bit. Unfortunately, as evidenced by experiences with my own ring light, I am stupidly light-sensitive. *Slow* color-shifting has rendered me sick before.

OSP

Very sorry this made you feel sick! We've added a flashing lights warning to the description. It stops at ~7:09 and stays on one color for the rest of the pod. That's on us, we should have labeled that much more clearly. -B

I will admit a bit of it’s my fault as well. At no point after hearing that Red was going to play with her lights did it occur to me that I might want to stick to the audio-only version.

Adrian

I NEED to know what lights Red has. Specifically because I love them and I want them. I keep finding light strips but I adore string lights.

In response to the groundhogs day entrapment question, I suggest anyone who hasn’t seen the Xena episode “Been there, done that” should. Think groundhogs day + Greek version of Romeo and Juliet + cartoon antics

Are Blue and Cyan part Australian? Because the Samba thing is absolutely what an Australian would do. For context for non-Australians, never ask us anything. We will lie, and every Australian within five metres will corroborate that lie. That's how we got drop bears

I've seen all seasons of the Great Canadian Baking Show, except the latest one, and three odd seasons of British Bake-Off, and the difference between them in tone kind of surprised me. I'm not really sure why it surprised me so much. But just getting to see how different things are, both culturally and in the way the contestants and judges interact with each other. I tried out a few recent episodes of Bake-Off, and yeah, I agree with Red, it felt really mean-spirited in comparison to how it was in earlier seasons.

Sam Fisher

See, this is why I have never liked Bake-Off. That and being unable to tell who was at the top and who was at the bottom of the competition that week.

AllieWhoops

The coolest thing about old bakeoff was that when people would be really struggling, Mel and Sue would start swearing loudly at the cameras so that the editors couldn't show the person having a breakdown.

Ebony Voigt

Also as a Australian - can confirm! We bullshit our way through everything XD

Antony

Australians: Bullshitting our way on the world scene since 1901

Something I liked about School of Chocolate is that the loser of the first challenge every episode got a private lesson from Amaury so it was actually kind of a catch up mechanic.

secretly hoping blue eye samurai sparks a detail diatribe in the future 🤞

Thanks for the "btw, this is also up as a video" bit at the start. I have been listening through all AASS episodes and was like "Damn, I wish I could see what Red is doing with the lights. But the AASS is only audio"

Red under blue light is SPECIFICALLY an 80s movie glowy effect.

Jennifer Sieben

Oh, I think Red just put into words the feeling I've been feeling with Bake Off lately. This is very helpful. Also I second the rec for Blown Away.
