Absurdist theatre has a fun version of this, where by dint of the genrea the audience knows the characters are boned somehow, but they don't, but they almost do because they're on the verge of realising they're in a fiction.

Red

Love it, especially citing how the best of doomed heroes work to bring hope to everyone else. But I keep imagining Red as that elderly oracle smirkily saying "You're screwed." ;)
